The New Riders of The Purple Sage were regarded as America's favourite psychedelic cowboy band in the early 1970's. What had started as a chance for the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia to learn pedal steel guitar as he accompanied singer John 'Marmaduke' Dawson and his unique songbook of classic Americana tunes, had become its own entity by 1972. This release captures the band at the late show from November 23rd, 1972, at the Academy of Music, Thanksgiving In New York City, featuring the band in the midst of an energetic and highly regarded tour.

This is another blast from the past--NRPS in good form live on stage in '72. This previously unreleased show (with guitarist David Rea on "I Don't Need No Doctor", and "Willie and the Hand Jive") is of course after Garcia was no longer a member of the band, but they acquit themselves nicely throughout this gig. With all the live shows that have been released in the past, this is another typically good show with the usual tunes we've heard before. But its that certain energy the band doled out when they hit the stage that keeps you listening. Listen to songs like "Leaving On Her Mind", "Portland Woman", "She's No Angel", "I Don't Know You", "Long Black Veil", "Louisiana Lady", and other tunes that were such a part of the band's repertoire. This is good time music hippie style--even the more country/bluegrass tunes included here.
