This auction is for an original hexagonal shaped foil cover for the ultra rare 1968 independent label psychedelic masterpiece by The New Tweedy Brothers. This cover has been in my collection for many years and is most definitely original. The recent Shadoks reissue is a close proximity, but if you look closely, the font is different in the word 'Ridon' on the reissue. The condition is typical of most of the surviving covers, with some creasing and wear, due to the fragile nature of the cover and because it is oversized. Most covers were immediately damaged because they didn't fit into shop bins or on record collection shelves. The famous design was, of course, made to look like a sugar cube, recognized by acid heads everywhere as a symbol of the counterculture.


It is believed that twice as many covers were produced as compared to discs. The band actually picked up the flats from the print shop and cut and pasted them up themselves. One story as to the shortage of the covers is that they were very expensive to produce, and so the band only picked up 500. When they went back later to get the remailing 500 copies, the shop had closed and destroyed the leftovers. At any rate, there are far fewer covers in existance then Ridon discs. Mint original discs without covers were located years ago and have been circulating for almost 20 years. If you are one of the many collectors that owns just the disc, here's your chance to obtain an original cover to go with your disc. Let's face it, a large part of the interest in this record (besides the music!) has always been the unusual cover. The value of your disc would greatly increase if you had an original cover to go with it!


Condition: As I mentioned, the condition is typical of most remaining copies, with general wear, edge wear, and creasing where the jacket would stick out in a record collection. Also, a small word written in ink but successfully removed with rubbing alcohol was on the right side of the lyrics to 'Somebody's Peepin.' The size was appproximately 1" x 1/2," and, although the ink is gone, the tip of the pen left an impression. It looks like it said the name Toby. Not very noticable, though. Overall, I would grade this cover VG. It is not in top condition, but it seems unlikely that you'll ever have a chance again to purchase just a cover. The original custom cut white inner sleeve is also included with the cover.
