Description

This is an extremely collectable very, very, rare FIRST PRESSING
copy of the English Folk album;

'THE FIRST FOLK REVIEW RECORD'

It's on the FOLKSOUND RECORDS LABEL Cat No. FS 100 and is Stereo
It was released in 1974

The unique thing about this LP is that all the tracks were especially recorded
solely for this album.

The artists, all stalwarts of the Folk Club scene, gave their services free in order to help FOLK REVIEW.

The locations for the recordings (by Bernard Whitty) were;
The Music Room of Schallenge House, Bromyard;
Austin House, Nantwich;
and the Folksound Studios, Halsall near Ormskirk in Lancashire.
in September and October in 1974

PETER BELLAMY designed the sleeve and Fred Woods produced.

Originally only available from the magazine "FOLK REVIEW" produced in 1974
and long-since deleted.

The full list of artists on the album is;

NIC JONES
JUNE TABOR
PETER BELLAMY
ROSEMARY HARDMAN
VIN GARBUTT
ENGLISH TAPESTRY
DAVE BURLAND

CONDITION.
The sleeve, both sides, has a little age-related but acceptable
creasing and mild ring-wear, but nothing off-putting.
It's VG+

Labels both sides EX+

The vinyl both sides isnice and clean with
no worrying scratches or scuffs.
Both sides played fine and I would grade them  EX+

The 14 TRACK LISTING (with notes) is;

SIDE 1.

DAVE BURLAND - The Duke of Gordon's Daughter
Child ballad No. 237 and the only love ballad
with a happy ending that Dave Burland sings.

JUNE TABOR - Bushes and Briars
The words are those printed from The Seeds Of Love and the tune - used
in the film Far From The Madding Crowd - was collected by Cecil Sharp.

NIC JONES - The Bonnie Banks Of Fordie
The text is collated from verses in Child, and the tune is inspired
by one in Dean Christie's Traditional Ballad Airs for 'The Laird
of Drum.'

PETER BELLAMY - Peggy Brawn
An obviously Irish tune collected in Norfolk by Peter Bellamy from
the singing of Walter Pardon; how it got there is anyone's guess.
Words and music were published in Folk Review, August 1974,
and are copyright by Walter Pardon

ENGLISH TAPESTRY - Valentine Chant
Collected by Fred Hamer  and published in Green Groves.
The arrangement is by Brian Brittain.

VIN GARBUTT  -  Boulavogue
Sometimes known as 'Father Murphy's Lament', the song concerns
the sequel to the 1798 rebellion in County Wexford, when Father Murphy
led the Republican forces against the Crown. He was
afterwards captured, excommunicated and executed.

ROSEMARY HARDMAN - Latin Lady
One of Rosemary Hardman's most popular songs, written for
Vin Garbutt as an imaginative commemoration of his days
in Gibralter.

SIDE 2.

NIC JONES - The Warlike Lads of Russia
The words are from a broadside in the Harkness Colection at
Preston; and the tune is collated from various traditional sources
with contributions from Nic Jones.

PETER BELLAMY - The Whale Catchers
Taken from the version published in The Penguin Book Of English
Folk Songs, originally collected in 1900 by Percy Merrick from the
singing of Henry Mills of Lodsworth, Sussex.

DAVE BURLAND - George Collins
Learned from the singing of Terry Whelans of the Critics.

ENGLISH TAPESTRY - Whitsuntide Carol
Published as 'The Whitsun Song' in English Dance and Song Vol. XXXV1, No. 1
Words collected by A.L.Peck and Russell Wortley from Alfred Smith, 1939;
tune recorded by Peter Kennedy from Thomas Coningsby, 1956. Arranged by Brian Brittain.

JUNE TABOR - The Fair Maid Of Wallington
The tune was learned from Maddie Prior and the
words collated by June Tabor from various versions in Child.

VIN GARBUTT - Maguire's Jig / O'Rourke's Reel

ROSEMARY  HARDMAN - Spare Rib Rag
Rosemary Hardman's answer to Women's Lib - and
one of her end-of-evening specialties.

I am in the process of selling a few rare and unusual records, some in MINT but most in the EX or VERY GOOD PLUS range of condition.

I try to grade records as accurately and as fairly as I can, as I have found that things I have bought on eBay have mostly been described pretty well, with only a couple in over nearly two-hundred transactions being not quite as described - but near enough for me not to complain!

MINT (M) -  Sealed and/or obviously unplayed. Perfect condition.

NEAR MINT (NM) -  Vinyl in new condition, record may have been played once or twice.
The cover may have very, very slight wear and/or creasing.

EXCELLENT. (EX) - The record shows evidence of being played with a few light surface marks or scuffs. the cover posssibly has slight general wear.

VERY GOOD (VG) - The record shows signs of being played a lot with a few light scuffs,  scratches and subject to normal wear and tear.

GOOD - Plays reasonably well but has lots of scuffing/scratching that may be distracting. The cover shows lots of wear with creasing, tears and splits.
