Five Leaves Left, recorded in 1969, was the first of three albums by British folk musician Nick Drake!.

Like Bryter Layter and unlike Pink Moon, this album contains no completely solo songs. Nick was accompanied by members of the British folk-rock group Fairport Convention!!!

Nicholas Rodney Drake (19 June 1948 – 25 November 1974) was an English singer-songwriter and musician best known for his acoustic, autumnal songs. His primary instrument was the guitar!!, though he was also proficient at piano, clarinet, and saxophone. Although he failed to find a wide audience during his lifetime, Drake's work has grown steadily in stature, to the extent that he now ranks among the most influential English singer-songwriters of the last 50 years!!!.

Drake signed to Island Records when he was twenty years old, and released his debut album Five Leaves Left in 1969. By 1972, he had recorded a further two albums, although none sold more than 5,000 copies in their initial releases, while his reluctance to perform live or be interviewed further contributed to his lack of commercial success. Despite this, he was able to gather a loyal group of people who would champion his music. One such person was his manager, Joe Boyd, who had a clause put into his own contract with Island Records that ensured Nick's records would never go out of print. Drake suffered from depression and insomnia throughout his life, and the topics were often reflected in his lyrics. Upon completion of his third album, 1972's Pink Moon, he withdrew from both live performance and recording, retreating to his parents' home in rural Warwickshire. On 25 November 1974, Drake died from an overdose of amitriptyline, a prescribed antidepressant; he was 26 years old!!!.

There was residual interest in Drake's music through the mid-1970s, but it was not until the 1979 release of the retrospective album Fruit Tree that his back catalogue came to be reassessed. By the mid-1980s, Drake was being credited as an influence by such artists as Robert Smith and Peter Buck. In 1985, The Dream Academy reached the UK and US charts with "Life in a Northern Town", a song written for and dedicated to Drake. By the early 1990s, he had come to represent a certain type of 'doomed romantic' musician in the UK music press, and was frequently cited by artists including Kate Bush, Paul Weller, and The Black Crowes. Drake's first biography was written in 1997, and was followed in 1998 by the documentary film A Stranger Among Us. In 2000, Volkswagen featured the title track from Pink Moon in a television advertisement, and within one month Drake had sold more records than he had in the previous thirty years!!!.

The vinyl

This is the original super thick type of vinyl only found on these early originals! and lies perfectly flat on the turntable!

On initial inspection this vinyl looks like new! Super glossy apearance and it is hard to see a blemish!, However if looked at under strong light i can see two or three very very fine surface scratches and i mean very fine. These adversly cause some light static ticks only on side one, in very minimal places during two of three tracks only! In fact side two plays near perfect on my system! Please note! This album features many quiet slow tracks and it is all too easy to be critical about these early seventies pressings. I have played this vinyl track for track on a top system at very loud volume, I must stress the audio is super cristal clear and very vibrant through out! (no) grooveware (no) background noise what so ever! Truly amaizing for 38 years old!! The audio is absolutely top on all frequencies with just the barest minimal of interfearance!! Very rare to find!

Please note, I always add this disclaimer! Please allow for the odd light static ticks\clicks in some places (not consistant throughout the audio) Please remember that this is 38 years old and not a reissue.,, and would have been originally played on a 38 year old system! In my opinion the audio is truly top cristal clear and vibrant and the odd intermitant pops didn't truly detract from the overal awesome experiance!!!

The labels

Original Island pink rimed labels (this is the oficial 2nd uk pressing) not a reissue! Only two or three spider marks visable only! (you can still even dee the plastic in the spindle hole) this idicates that this has barely ever been played at all!!!!

The Cover

This is the original unlaminated E.DAY & CO (LONDON) printed gatefold cover! There is light general rubbing storage ware with age! also ar the spine and edges, minimal creases worth to mention. This is strong and straight and has no splits or tares! This is the original! (see photos)

I must stress that this is not the often seen reissue this is a genuine 2nd UK pressing from my personal collection and has been in my collection for at least 30 years!!!!Extreemely playable and extreemely enjoyable \collectable, there arn't many of these originals around and very limited amount were initially pressed!!!
