Artist or Band: NICK DRAKE  Album Title: Five Leaves Left.  Producer(s): Joe Boyd.  TRACK LIST: Side 1: Time Has Told Me; River Man; Three Hours; Way to Blue; Day Is Done.  Side 2: Cello Song; The Thoughts of Mary Jane; Man in a Shed; Fruit Tree; Saturday Sun.  Label/Format: Island – Original pink black label with smooth finish. (Please see my label scans). Cat Number: ILPS 9105. Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm. Country of Manufacture: England.  Original Year of Release: 1969  Matrix Nos: ILPS 9105 A 2 1 / ILPS 9105 B 2 1 Rarity: Very rare as a ‘first pressing’, even the pink rim and subsequent pressings are elusive too. This Island label design was not available very long anyway before being changed to the more familiar full pink i version and then the pink rims. Just a matter of months only in fact.  In his short recording lifetime, his albums failed to sell and this title is one of the rarest and most sought-after albums within the Island catalogue.  This album, like so many other classics was often doomed to bargain-bins, often with large damaging stickers applied as the lack of interest at the time took its toll. Now there simply not enough around to meet the ever increasing demand, many collectors now have to rely on reissues, and this man’s work as always been ‘in-print.’  How times and opinions change: for many, now the Holy Grail of folk albums, its status amongst the ‘Greats’ is undiminished and is actually elevating for every year as it ages. A most-prize item for the discerning record collector.  Finding one in really lovely condition is a major task as fewer and fewer are made available, most of the better examples locked away in valuable collectors, rarely do they surface to be offered.  Musicians: Nick Drake - vocals and acoustic guitar; Paul Harris – piano; Richard Thompson – electric guitar; Danny Thompson – double bass; Rocki Dzidzornu – congas; Clare Lowther – cello; Tristram Fry – drums & vibraphone.
Condition of Vinyl: VG+. There are lots of mainly light surface marks. There are two very small ones that can be felt with the finger but I played the whole album and there are not skips and just the occasional pop.  Remember i am grading my records under a very strong light.   The ISLAND labels look fantastic and what a pure pleasure to view these rare Island labels looking so clean and fresh. Amongst the rarest Island labels ever made and these are how the connoisseur collectors want to see them. Check photos.
Plays well with some very light surface noise practically throughout and also the occasional pop.   No jumps or skips.
Condition of Cover: VG. The gatefold front and back unlaminated sleeve is in good condition. With light wear all around. There is one very small tear at the bottom of the back.  Check photos!!!!

GRADING:

All records are graded using the UK ‘Record Collector’ format:

MINT (M): The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint. 

EXCELLENT (EX): The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing. 

VERY GOOD (VG): The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD (G): The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

FAIR (F): The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

POOR (P): The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD (B): The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.

PACKAGING INFORMATION:

LPs and singles will be sent in a record mailing envelope and will be protected by two cardboard stiffeners.
