·      NICK DRAKE (WITH JOHN CALE, VIRTUALLY THE ENTIRE LINE-UP OF THE FAIRPORT CONVENTION, DORIS TROY AND OTHERS) – MONSTROUSLY RARE, ORIGINAL, 1971 SELF-TITLED FIRST U.S. ALBUM (“NICK DRAKE”) RELEASED IN THIS FORM AND WITH THIS COVER ONLY IN THE UNITED STATES AND ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY NOWHERE ELSE!!! ORIGINAL 1971 ISLAND RECORDS (DISTRIBUTED BY CAPITOL) STEREO LP SMAS-9307

·      ORIGINAL U.S. PRESSING

·      BY FAR THE RAREST NICK DRAKE STUDIO ALBUM IN EXISTENCE!

·      THIS ALBUM IS A COMPOSITE (A “HYBRID”) OF NICK DRAKE’S FIRST TWO BRITISH ALBUMS (FIVE LEAVES LEFT AND BRYTER LAYTER WITH A TOTALLY UNIQUE COVER) ; THE ALBUM SOLD MISERABLY, RECEIVED NEXT TO ZERO MARKETING PITCH AND WAS ALMOST INSTANTLY DELETED FROM THE ISLAND/CAPITOL CATALOG (SURVIVING COPIES ARE A SIGHT UNSEEN); WHEN WARNER BROTHERS ACQUIRED ISLAND'S DISTRIBUTION RIGHTS IN THE U.S. IN 1974, THE ALBUM WAS DISCONTINUED AND THE NEW WARNER SUBSIDIARY (ANTILLES) DECIDED TO ISSUE A "PROPER" VERSION OF THE NICK DRAKE'S FIRST ALBUM ("FIVE LEAVES LEFT"), OMITTING THE TRACKS FROM THE SECOND ALBUM ("BRYTER LAYTER")

·      ONE OF ONLY TWO NICK DRAKE ALBUMS RELEASED IN UNITED STATES IN HIS LIFETIME (THE OTHER BEING ‘PINK MOON’); OFFICIAL U.S. RELEASE OF NICK  DRAKE’S FIRST TWO ALBUMS (FIVE LEAVES LEFT AND BRYTER LAYTER) DID NOT TAKE PLACE UNTIL 1976!!!

·      NOTE: THIS IS THE ORIGINAL (ONE AND ONLY) PRESSING OF THIS ALBUM, RELEASED WHILE ISLAND RECORDS WAS STILL IN ITS INFANCY AND DISTRIBUTED BY CAPITOL RECORDS, AND STILL BEARING THE CHARACTERISTIC CAPITOL RECORDS CATALOG NUMBER (SMAS-9307)

·      CAPITOL RECORDS, JACKSONVILLE, IL PRESSING

·      ORIGINAL WHITE ISLAND LABEL WITH A “DESERT ISLAND” LOGO, “DISTRIBUTED BY CAPITOL RECORDS” INSCRIPTION ALONG THE BOTTOM OF THE LABEL, AND PINK RIM ALONG THE LABEL’S EDGE

·      THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST U.S. PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.

·      ORIGINAL GATEFOLD COVER, MADE OF THICK CARDBOARD (AMERICAN STYLE)

·      CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS

·      THICK, HEAVY VINYL PRESSING

·      This album has NEVER been available on legitimate Compact Disc or in any other way, manner or format.

This is a selection of tracks from Nick’s first two albums for American consumption. 5 stars for the music, but 3 for the concept.

The five stellar 69-70 tracks are all here - “Northern Sky”, “River Man”, “Three Hours”, “Chime of a City Clock” and “Cello Song”, so it’s unlikely they ever seriously considered putting out a "Nick Drake volume two" despite this compilation only containing 8 cuts from a choice of 20. Perhaps they were hoping to sell enough copies to justify releasing or importing more original albums into the U.S. which might have otherwise appeared less tempting had this release contained more tracks.

What makes the album interesting today is the sleeve design, which is a gatefold depicting a laughing Nick Drake in a cornfield with the track listing on the right, the back cover is similar to the front cover with an alternate snap from the same photo session.

An advert promoting the release appeared in the 31st July 1971 edition of Billboard with the tag line “It’s for people who have time to be quiet.”

(EXCERPT FROM AN ANONYMOUS ONLINE REVIEW)

A great first album by the troubadour of love, grace and infinite sadness, “Nick Drake” was released originally in 1971 ONLY IN THE UNITED STATES IN THIS FORM, to very little critical and zero popular interest and disappeared from the market without a trace.

·                          CONDITION:

·                          THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record comes in the original (turquoise) Island stock inner sleeve.

(c)         The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

THE COVER IS NEAR MINT !

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.   Inside gatefold has some light ring wear as well (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER

POSTAGE & SHIPPING:

We offer three postage rates for domestic orders: USPS Media Mail, USPS Priority Mail and USPS Express Mail and three rates for international shipments:  USPS First Class, USPS Priority International Mail, and USPS Express International Mail (in a small number of cases, we will, at our discretion and for purely technical reasons, substitute First Class Mail with eBay's Global Shipping, which is fundamentally the same service at about the same cost). INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS PLEASE NOTE: WE RECOMMEND (BUT DO NOT INSIST) that you select USPS International Priority Mail when making a payment.

INTERNATIONAL POSTAGE rates vary from one region of  the world to another. For SPECIFIC international and domestic postage rates, please click on " Shipping, returns, and payments" tab in the header of our listing.

CRITICALLY IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

(A) All orders valued at $50.00 or more will be shipped fully insured against loss, damage or theft by ShipCover, eBay's contracted insurer, at our expense (B) Yes, we do combine items into a single shipment; in order to enable this feature, the winning bidders should WAIT until their last item of interest ends and ONLY THEN make a payment. Doing otherwise will result in multiple shipments to the same customer and forfeiture of multiple shipping charges already paid. We can only make reasonable inference on the record's playing condition based on its visual appearance. (D) This seller will NOT cancel erroneous, frivolous and prank bids. The bidders can do so on their own, by visiting eBay's Site Map, then clicking on Bid Retractions link. (E) This seller does not specifically grade or describe certain items, such as: shrink (cellophane) wrap and accompanying extras (inserts, booklets, etc.); however, the presence of these items WILL be noted and accompanied by the gallery photo(s). (F) Please do not submit any bids on our items if you have insufficient user history. (G) Other than in very rare justified cases, failure to pay for the item you won amounts to a fraud and will result in a permanent ban on bidding on our future listings.
