CASEY ANDERSON
Blues IS A Woman GONE
USA - 3 color ATCO RECORDS - SD 33 176
ORIGINAL 1965 first printing on the 3-color ATCO label that includes the original printed inner sleeve... yes, this is the same LP as can be found on eBay selling for the low, low price of $159.00 ... here a copy equal if not better than the one listed....
This is a Great, if not legendary Classic Folk Blues Lp by Casey Anderson who made a solid mark in the sixties New York Village scene ... the amazing eye-catching cover features model Christa Paffgen who went on to be known as Nico of The Velvet Underground!
Here is the LP's inner notes:
Casey Anderson is a dynamic artist ... master showman ... these are just a few of the many accolades that have been garnered by Casey Anderson from the critics over the
past few years. He has been praised as a blues singer, a folk singer, as a composer, arranger, and as an outstanding contemporary musician. This is high praise indeed, but in the case of Casey Anderson it is richly deserved.
The dynamic quality that Casey Anderson brings to his music involves more than
showmanship, even more than an exceptional voice and a truly individual style.
Many singers have both showmanship and style, yet few are able to build the
same emotional intensity into a song that Casey Anderson does so knowingly With
his blues and folk material. The unusual warmth that he injects into his songs,
plus his personal appeal and unassailable musicianship, have made him one of
the outstanding entertainers of the modem era.
When the tall, good-looking Casey Anderson strides onto a stage and launches
into one of his up-tempo blues, selling the lyrics with his special charm and
feeling, he projects an excitement that usually transfixes his audience. It is
this unfailing excitement that has made him such a welcome performer at smart
night clubs, college concerts and on TV and records.
Casey Anderson's approach to folk music and blues is somewhat different than
that of the traditional blues performer. He makes no attempt to re-create or
imitate the past, but infuses his songs with a contemporary flavor that make
them riot for today. He is not averse to using a combination of styles for the
songs he composes, from the standard 12-bar blues form to a modern rock and roll beat. Yet he handles a traditional blues (like Trouble In Mind on this recording) with the taste -that such classics require. Since he has given a great deal of his time to a thorough study of folk. materials, and has an extensive collection of records and books on the subject, he well knows whereof he writes -and sings.
In this album Casey Anderson shows off the many facets of his wide-ranging
vocal style on a delightful collection of songs. They include plaintive blues
and happily swinging rhythm items. Most of them were written by Casey Anderson, thus displaying another side of this multi-talented performer. "Say Yes", the opening song in the collection is a medium tempo, moody blues lament, which he sings with soul and meaning. "A Little Lovin' Done" has a touch of a happy positive beat, and fits Casey Anderson's mood neatly. "Blues Is A Woman Gone" tells a tender, evocative story, and the singer's performance on this bitter-sweet lament is one of the high spots of the entire album. He handles the rocker "You Don't Know", with drive and excitement, and does the same for another infectious swinger, "Show Some, Sign." Elsewhere,"Trouble In Mind" receives a warm, touching rendition that could make Casey Anderson fans out of even "authentic" folk followers.
The musical arrangements that accompany the singer are striking. Simple,
uncluttered, and tremendously effective (and all by Casey Anderson), they
enhance the mood of every song, and compliment the singer's style and phrasing. The performances, the songs-, and the arrangements make this album a tour de force for Casey Anderson, as well as a genuinely moving recording.
Cover photo of Nico:
Born Christa Paeffgen, March 15, 1943 in Budapest, Hungary. At fifteen she
found herself on the set of "La Dolce Vita", a film which was being directed by
the great Federico Fellini. Nico modeled as a teen for a few years until she
recorded "I'm Not Saying" (produced by Jimmy Page) in London for Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham’s Immediate label. She soon traveled to New York where she studied acting and singing at the Lee Strasberg Method Studios. While spending more and more time at Andy Warhol's Factory and it was soon suggested that she sing a couple of songs with the Velvets. After being less than dependable as far as showing up for gigs, she was asked to leave the V.U. and went on to a creative but doomed solo career. Put the Stooges on a macrobiotic diet while she lived with Iggy in the Funhouse in Michigan. A once beautiful chanteuse, she ended up a sad figure and the subject of many legendary and pathetic tales. She died of a brain aneurysm while riding her bicycle in 1988. Her ghostly singing and tragic beauty foreshadowed what she always knew.
