Gedda was discovered by Carl Martin Ohman ( who is also credited with the discovery of enor Jussi Bjorling) ad took him on as a student gratis as Gedda was supporting his parents at the time. He made his opera debut in 1951 with the Royal Swedish Opera and the rest is history. He performed internationally for decades and is on of the most recorded singers in  history amassing over 200 recordings. He was also the last singer to take the stage at the  'Old Met' in its final gala performance.
