Commonly attributed to The Nighthawks, originally a late 1950's Texas rockabilly band, featuring Eddie Reeves.

In 1966 I produced two songs with the Amarillo, Texas group known as the Hysterical Society that was released by United Artists Records. The session took place at Associated Studio on 7th Avenue in New York City, and at the end of the session the band performed a track for "Delta Tau Baby" on which I later sang all vocals. I pressed 50 45-rpm copies of this recording using the Norman Petty produced original recording of "When Sin Stops" as the b-side, which was recorded at the Petty studio in Clovis in July 1958. At that time I was living in New York City and employed by United Artists Music publishing. During my next visit to Austin (probably 1966 or 1967) I went to the Delta Tau Delta frat house on San Jacinto Blvd. with a box of 25 singles and a case of beer. Some frat brothers (none of whom I knew) were in a meeting in the dining room where I entered unannounced and climbed onto the dining room table to rant and rave about the many positive attributes of the Delt fraternity, after which I stated they should drink beer and listen to the records I brought for them. Without further conversation I departed. The song "Delta Tau Baby" was written in the spring of 1959 by Bob Venable and me as a silly party song for our fraternity and it was sung there for the next 25 years or so. I have no copies of this 45-rpm single in my possession and imagine the 50 copies that once existed are either lost, destroyed, or spread far and wide. I hope this bit of history is helpful.
