Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. PLEASE NOTE: I will NOT send any item, no matter what its value without a Royal Mail or courier tracking number. ALL my items must be signed and traceable to comply with Ebay delivery rules. Please do NOT ask me to make any exceptions to this rule as no country offers 100% reliable service without it.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine, small and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Another from the collection purchased new by one owner, cover-protected and appearing very little played, and then with due care.

Rarity: Scarce as a first issue, especially in this condition. The stereo originals arguably the rarer of the two modes. Most copies that surface are on the orange RCA label that were soon to replace these Decca pressed black ones.

Brief Info: Issued in 1967, this was the arguably the second album by singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson. It is often regarded as his first proper album as ‘Spotlight on Nilsson’ issued in 1966 was a compilation of singles and B-sides. A highly ambitious set, issued in the Summer of Love, it is often compared favourably with The Beatles ‘Sgt Pepper’, but clearly is less lauded and known to many. A very psychedelic set that some critics rate as one the very best in that genre. It include two Beatles songs in ‘You Can’t Do That’ and a brilliant version of ‘She’s Leaving Home’, the latter from the Pepper album itself. Also a quality rendition of ‘River Deep Mountain High’ that concludes the album. It is documented that The Beatles loved this album themselves and with their help, helped Nilsson further his career, clearly they knew a gifted new talent had arrived. A complex and intricate album that is beautifully recorded with effects, fantasies and charm. Some lyrics are dark, and even unsettling but retain catchy melodies. Overall, a beautifully crafted piece of pop psychedelia and a bona fide classic of its time and for those still unfamiliar, well worth checking out. This a superb original with lovely cover and very clean stereo record.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front Clarifoil laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on the back via the spine edge. The main back panel is matt and smooth. A dedicated stereo mode cover, printed and made in England by Robert Stace, includes the Decca-style inner that is date-coded 3-68 which reiterates how early this copy is.

Lamination & Front: A superb colourful front with typically psychedelic overtones as was the trend of the year of release. Apart from a small few fine spine edge creases, this grades near mint and looks fantastic. The Clarifoil laminate retains deep shine, freshness and clarity with barely any traces of dulling or lifting. The lack of creasing away the edges is a rare sight on a cover over 50 years old and this piece of pop art will seldom be seen better.

Cover Back: Clearly this is very prone to wear being so dark and unprotected by laminate. This has little, a fine rub near the bottom left being the only only one of note and that hardly major. The surface avoiding creasing with any handling traces to revealing matt surfaces light and faint. The lack of ring wear with a heavy record inside half-a-century is a major plus and this challenging back gives scant clues of its genuine age and will prove incredibly difficult to find better.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both smooth, straight with no wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: The surface hardly worn at all, but one very fine central crease makes this a little less ‘solid’. Still quite straight with any bowing minimal, any compression very light and patchy. The text is fully present and strong under the solid clear laminate, also nicely centred on the narrow depth as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, nigh-on mint shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic psychedelic 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: only marked down for moderately light darkening of the paper that few can hope to avoid totally. The has two crisp undamaged window circles, the polylining clear and fresh (with a little gentle crinkle), and minimal creasing to the paper. All edges solidly intact with no repairs. This original inner is date-coded 3-68, so it was manufactured in March 1968, a mere three months after the album’s release date.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces very light, mostly wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare stereo first pressing plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. RCA Victor records on this label format were pressed to the highest quality by Decca, by the end of the decade pressings were switched to Pye. Few available copies will outperform this superb pressing significantly I feel sure. A complex and superbly produced album totally unspoilt by any mistreatment or usage on heavy-tracking equipment. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally very well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful, but arguably forgotten pop-psych classic. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
