Nina Simone was not only a "high priestess of soul", which was a title of one of her albums, but also an uncrowned queen of civil rights movement protest song. In her heyday, she was an undisputed ruler of the hearts and minds (and ears) of the progressive America. And what a voice!!! Very few divas, even those who apparently had better and more colorful voices than Nina, could compete with her in the department of sheer expressiveness. Nina could hum a phone book and come across as angry, sad, vivacious, sexy...This is Nina's second album for her first label (Bethlehem) and on this one she shares the spotlight with her label mates Chris Connor and Carmen McRae (Nina was originally perceived as a jazz vocalist, which was a mistake - she is a 100% pure blues and soul singer). (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted below, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the normal room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)            WE GRADE THE RECORD AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the perimeter of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings)

(c)             The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the very first pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, exceedingly vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from your compact disc!

(d)            PLEASE NOTE: This - of course - is an ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has just a HINT of light ring wear (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some light "friction" dirt/dust spots, probably from rubbing against other record covers. While we did not want to tinker with the integrity of the cover, these spots can easily be cleaned by the buyer by using a mild cleaner or plain eraser.

-         Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its reverse side (name in thin black ballpoint pen; initials in red marker, none larger than 1 x 1 inch in size)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No split seams (VERY, VERY unusual for KING/Bethlehem titles of this vintage)

-         No cut-out holes

-         No cut-out corners

-         No drill marks or indents

-         No stains

-         No yellowing from age

-         No mold or mildew spots

-         No stickers or labels

-         No water damage

-         No wrinkles/creases

-         No razor marks

-         No pressure marks, lines, streaks, or razor cuts.

-         No stamps

-         No warping

-         No glue traces or wax residue.

-         No bar codes

-         No RIAA stamps or stickers.

-         No peel-off marks
