Label/Format: Island – original pink outline Island format with orange/black eyeball logo. The surfaces are rough finished with heavy texturing.

Label Conditions: Both look impressive, very clean, fresh and attractive with deep pastel pink colour as-seen. Any spindle traces few and faint, this beautiful and elusive Island original appears little played.

Brief Info: With quite possibly the longest ever album title, this was Nirvana’s second album following the pop-psych classic, and arguably first ever rock concept album ‘The Story of Simon Simopath’. A band highly regarded by critics of the day, but they never sold in any great numbers. With so many classic bands, established performers and albums around in this golden era of British music, such acts were simply overlooked or disappeared altogether. ‘All of Us’, as it is better known, features their most well-known song, ‘Rainbow Chaser’, which opens this splendid set. More psych-pop from a quality Island band, I actually prefer this to their debut. A lovely a first issue and with high quality sound and little worn matt cover.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A single unlaminated format with matt smooth surfaces. Some versions were laminated. Printed and made in England, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover – Front & Back: Any wear to these vulnerable matt surface is gentle and light, the lack of ring wear on what is a thin wear-prone surface is great news. As stated, some were laminated, but that so often has major lifting and dulling issues and rarely avoids it. So this overall very clean matt version arguably looks better. A few light and fine creases on the front near two corner areas, but with only very modest visibility, the back has little to fault with any traces of handling only very light. This arguably scarce matt version will not prove easy to find much better.

Top Edge: Very thin but perfectly straight with hardly any wear.

Bottom Edge: Any rubbing to the very ends with minimal traces inbetween, again straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and still sharp with any thickening minimal. These entrance edges are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, again thin, but mainly straight with some compression. The text largely intact and present with any rubbing slight. .

Corners: Tip rubbing is mostly light and quite small, very fine shape retained with no heavy knocks.

Cover Summary: This matt version has fared well given its quite flimsy design, and overall, it’s one the few unlaminated ones and best I have seen. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain white unlined inner with the ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text. This politely aged with mild discolouration of the white paper. Two pristine window circles, hardly creased with all edges unsplit and no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. In terms of ‘usage’ marks, hardly any. A very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy appearing very lightly played on all the evidence with any surface marks light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little anything even registers. A little gentle dulling purely within the pressing which is common on these early heavy Pye pressings, but purely superficial and again, hardly seen in room light. Visually a quality Island record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent pop-psych album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal – the odd sporadic tick and some brief crackle on one joining groove, but virtually all the music on the album plays clean and impressive. Overall a clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing rasps or distortion. Few available copies will outperform this very first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little at all spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this elusive record. It could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. A great opportunity to own this original Island psychedelic classic.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
