First released in 1986, now celebrating its 40th anniversary, Sex Mad would serve as the second full-length from Canadian jazz-punk legends Nomeansno. The follow up to their much-loved 1982 debut album Mama, this would be the band's first work following their expansion into the jazzcore trio they would cement themselves as, with addition of long-time guitarist Andy Kerr to the dynamic duo of brothers Rob and John Wright. Soon forging a longstanding relationship with Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles label, who widely distribute the record, the tracklist features some of the group's most iconic bangers such as 'Dead Bob' and 'Dad', while remaining an ideal entry point for newcomers who might be slightly overwhelmed with the frenetic cacophony of later works such as 1989's career height yet more impenetrable Wrong. Packed with reliably absurdist takes on American society and brimming with avantgarde musicianship, the addition of Kerr's dynamic yet digestible riffs would help aid the band in infiltrating college radio stations, expanding their cultlike platform beyond their preconceived notions of underground subterraneanism. In short, this is living proof as to why Nomeansno remain your favourite punk band's favourite punk band.
