Notes:-- Also known as Norfolk Jubilee Quartette.  Paramount is a local record label from Port Washington, Wisconsin (at one time a chair factory),  known for their “race” records (12/13000 series). This group was from Norfolk, VA.  Their recording career spanned 19 years, recording Gospel, Blues and Vaudeville numbers. Original members: Len Williams (bass), Buddy Butts (tenor), Otto Tutson (second tenor) and Delrose Hollins (baritone). First with OKeh Records, in 1923, they moved over to Paramount Record Company, replaced the original Tenor with J. “Buddy” Archer, recording for the most part spiritual songs.  At Paramount they released over forty songs, then in 1937 worked for Decca.  This Matrix series was recorded in New York in March, 1925 per a discography of their music listed in the book “Virginia’s Blues, Country and Gospel Records” 1902-1943 by Kip Lornell.  Both sides of this apparently unknown recording are not included in the listings.  The Norfolk Quartet appeared on records under several names, including the Jubilee Gospel Singers, the Virginia Jubilee Singers, the Midnight Four, the Wiseman Sextet, the Mobile Four, the Georgia Sacred Singers, the Down South Boys, The Four Alphabets, and others.

Grading

MINT * Perfect record, clean gloss, no marks. A mint record is uncommon.

MINT- * Very clean only a few light marks; plays very well.

VG++ * Surface marks, no scratches, should play and look very good with faint, if any, audible surface noise.

VG+ * The record shows signs of use, but plays well despite quite visible surface marks and possibly some light scratches. This grading is often used for records which have not been cared for perfectly but still play well overall. A few very faint clicks may be allowed, and will be included in the description.

VG * Still a nice record, looks used, light scratches, no gouges, still plays fairly well. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music.

VG- * Record shows wear, marks, scratches, surface noise.
