Believe LP - THE THIRD POWER (Vanguard VSD-6554) EXTREMELY RARE PROMOTIONAL...NOT FOR SALE ALBUM. Their sole album briefly appeared in 1970, and has gone on to be acclaimed as one of the finest psychedelic hard rock albums of its era. It is a must for all fans of hard psychedelia.
Original one and only1970 stereo LP by somewhat legendary Michigan power trio. Heavy rock/psych in all its glory, a la Blue Cheer, Cream, MC5, etc. 9 THIRD POWER originals, including: 'Gettin' Together,' 'Feel So Lonely,' 'Passed By,' 'Lost In A Daydream,' 'Persecution,' 'Comin' Home,' 'Won't Beg Any More,' 'Crystalline Chandelier' & 'Like Me Love Me.' Vinyl in fabulous condition.
The Third Power were a Detroit-area band based in Farmington, Michigan. They were a power trio fashioned after Cream but with a very sweet vocalist in bassist, Jem Targal. They wrote interesting and sometimes very powerful tunes usually with a sweet melodic vocal line on top of some crashing heavy music.
Drummer Jim Craig had originally been a jazz drummer which is evident in his mastery of rhythm basics and his steady timing. When recruited to play heavy Rock n Roll he was given bigger sticks and asked to play harder! He was masterful and very original in his approach to a double bass kit. Drew Abbott, lead guitarist, envied Eric Clapton and aspired to play faster than the master. He is a very competent player as is confirmed by his stint as guitarist with Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band during its heyday in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The Third Power released one single called "Snow" backed with "We, you, I" on an independent local label in 1969. Vanguard Records wanted to break into the fast growing Rock Scene and first signed Detroit's Frost featuring Dick Wagner. Vanguard's Producer Sam Charters then signed The Third Power in late 1969. The resulting LP Believe was a disappointment to those fans who saw, heard and felt the power in the band's live performances. It was a case of the wrong producer and the wrong label.
Vanguard struggled to promote the LP and then dropped any option for a second try. This was unfortunate as the band had great potential and many other songs which were never released.
Drew Abbott shared success with Seger and still fronts a band in The Traverse City, MI. area. Jim Craig has given up playing drums and lives in LA. Jem Targal has had great success as a visual artist and still lives in the Detroit area.
