Tracklisting:
Nurse with Wound (or shortened as NWW) is the main recording name for British musician Steven Stapleton. Nurse with Wound was originally a band, formed in 1978 by Stapleton, John Fothergill and Heman Pathak. The band ranges in many genres such as avant-garde, industrial, noise, dark ambient, and drone.
Their early recordings, all made quickly, were heavily influenced by free improvisation and Krautrock and were generally considered industrial music, despite the objections of the group.
By 1981, only Stapleton was left from the original trio and he now regards 1982's Homotopy to Marie, as being the first proper Nurse with Wound release. There are now over 40 full length NWW titles. Stapleton's fondness for dada, surrealism and absurdist humor are demonstrated in much of NWW's output, which, though it draws directly on nearly every musical genre imaginable (from cabaret music to nursery rhymes to John Cage to The Beach Boys to krautrock to pop music to ambient music) retains a distinctive and recognizable aura. Musique concrete may be the most prominent touchstone, due to Stapleton's frequent, and often humorous, use of creative tape loops and editing. This aesthetic is fully represented in the artwork on the album covers, virtually all of which is created by Stapleton, mostly under the pseudonym "Babs Santini".
Although Stapleton has sole curatorship of NWW, the group has a long and illustrious list of collaborators including Diana Rogerson (Stapleton's wife), James Thirlwell of Foetus, Tony Wakeford, David Jackman of Organum, Andrew McKenzie of The Hafler Trio, Stereolab, Jim O'Rourke, Christoph Heemann, William Bennett of Whitehouse, Robert Haigh of Sema, Rose McDowall (Strawberry Switchblade), Annie Anxiety, Jhonn Balance of Coil, Matt Waldron of Irr. App (Ext) and most regularly David Tibet of Current 93. At time of writing, NWW is a core duo of Stapleton and Colin Potter, the latter having first worked with NWW on 1992's "Thunder Perfect Mind" when it was recorded at Potter's ICR studio. Potter has appeared on almost every NWW release since.
Some words about Current 93 from the internet:"Current 93 is the ongoing work of David Tibet (now known as David Michael), once a member of Psychic TV and 23 Skidoo and also the founder of Dog's Blood Order. Dog's Blood Order was David's project which preceeded Current 93. Current 93 began in 1982, releasing a ritualistic single in the next year called LAShTAL and went on to release LPs of noisy soundscapes up through 1986. At that point, they turned to a more "apocalyptic folk" sound, with acoustic guitars and atonal vocals; yet they constantly evolve a new style with each record. Though the group is really Tibet's own, a family of ever changing musicians helps out with each release. The one musician to appear on virtually all Current 93 releases is Steven Stapleton of Nurse With Wound, and David Tibet in his turn has appeared on numerous Nurse With Wound releases. Members of Current 93 have collaborated with other groups such as Coil and Death In June. In addition to this, David's record label, Durtro, has released music from Antony and the Johnsons, Shirley Collins, Nature And Organization, Tiny Tim and others."
Anthony Charles Wakeford started his music career as bassist in '77 British punk band Crisis. In 1980 Crisis disbanded and Wakeford formed Death In June together with guitar player Douglas Pearce. In 1985 he left the band to form his own personal project, called Above The Ruins. The music continued in the vein of early Death In June and Joy Division, with a nervous and dramatic post-punk sound. The new band disbanded quite soon, and Tony Wakeford stayed away from the music scene for some years, pursuing his own political and magical interests. He came back in 1987 with Sol Invictus, involving Ian Read and Karl Blake of Lemon Kittens and Shock Headed Peters. The music of Sol Invictus on the first recordings was a strange mixture of acoustic and electronic sounds, creating some epic and dramatic songs which stand against the decadence of the West and of modern society. This original and unique sound characterizes the first three albums, "Against The Modern World" (1988), "In The Jaws Of The Serpent" (1989) and "Lex Talionis" (1990). In 1991 Ian Read left the band to form Fire + Ice, and Wakeford took the sound of Sol Invictus progressively more towards a dark folk approach, hiring new talented musicians, such as genius violinist Matt Howden and talented singer and instrumentist Sally Doherty. He's also active with the project L'Orchestre Noir, HaWthorn, and a series of collaborations with different artists. Sol Invictus' own self-produced label was S.V.L. Records, then called Cerne and finally Tursa.
