Description
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome gatefold LP from Iramac (6509, LP pressed in Germany* / jacket printed in The Netherlands, black/silver label, stereo) features the splendid violinist Nap de Klijn and pianist Rudolf Jansen in works by Handel, Sénaillé, Tartini, and Vitali. This is exalted playing by any measure, and all those who treasure the art of the violin will find much to admire here.
Their exact program is as follows:
George Frideric Handel: Sonata No. 4 in D Major
Tommaso Antonio Vitali (arr. Leopold Charlier): Chaconne in G minor
Jean-Baptiste Sénaillé: Sonata No. 9 in G minor
Giuseppe Tartini: Sonata in G minor
de Klijn plays with a tremendous verve and precision, with no lack of poetry, that recalls no less than Jascha Heifetz. These remarkable performances were recorded at Credo Soest Netherlands (producer: Theo van de Water / engineer: Melle Weersma) circa 1964.
de Klijn plays the “Joseph Marlén” Stradivarius violin of 1714.
*A small note: Those unfamiliar with Iramac pressings will find them quite impressive – the LPs were pressed on medium- to heavy-weight vinyl and are extremely sturdy, with a nice glossy label.
Incidentally, on the interio panels of the gatefold jacket are printed excellent liner notes in English (by Christopher Grier, London), French (by Marcel Dolsy, Bruxelles), and in German (by Alfred Beaujean, Aachen). The striking typography on the jacket front was designed by Jacques Batteljee, Gkf Amsterdam.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor bumping/wear at corners, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and very striking in appearance – overall, a lovely collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. Those requiring flawless or NM surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
