Description

"Nearly All Our Own Work" - The Singers, Instrumentalists, Composers and Arrangers of Newquay School, Cornwall

Here's an LP you don't see everyday!

<

A little background on the LP;

Goff Richards was the music teacher at Newquay School at the time and he wanted to showcase musical ability of his students. Goff was friends with Basil Tait, who ran TC Recordings. Basil agreed to record the students at the school and the LP would be custom pressed by Sentinel Records, based near Marazion. During lunchtimes Goff would rehearse the students, many of whom has written pieces just for this project. The recordings were all made in a single day. Basil arrived in his mobile studio (in a horse box!) and ran a feed through to a large room in the school. Each group was recorded in turn and the final results were pressed up by Sentinel Records, with artwork designed by Mart Rodda who also played on the LP. The LP was only sold in the school to students and parents.

I don't know pressing run, but we're talking low hundreds at the most. It wasn't available in any shops, so make a guess on pressing size. SMALL!! The school no longer have copies, TC Recordings no longer have copies (or the original tapes) and many of the other people involved in the project no longer have a copy.

I've lived in Newquay most of my life and have been actively searching out this record for years. Posters, newspaper ads, etc. have all proved fruitless. This is only the second copy I've ever come across! This is a rare one.

So what is the music like? Well, of course as with any school LP you get some classical, West Side Story, etc. But the rest of the LP is superb, with some excellent folk and rock numbers. There is a surprisingly high hit rate of good tracks on the LP, here are some clips of the best ones.

The LP kicks of with 'Wandering Town', a superb electric folk number from Peter Rodger & Mike Pryor

 Effigy gives us a snotty track called Do You Wonna Try It

Sunrise by Ian Cox & Stephen McClennon is a nice gentle folk number

Nigel Bray & Peta Andrews gives us a rather splendid Mike Pryor penned number, Neptune

The standout track is Full Circle, by Company. Written by Jane Robins, this is a truly amazing, beautful number

 Mike Pryor wrote a few songs on the LP, here's a solo number 'Bogie Rag'

Some of the members of Effigy also formed Jester, here's their contribution to the LP, 'Turn Around'

Even if it just had "Full Circle" on this LP and the rest was dross I would say you need to own it!

The LP was reviewed in Galactic Ramble and this is what they had to say;

"This obscure secondary school album turns up on a few wants lists, mainly owing to having been offered at an extremely high price by a prominent record dealer a few years back. Musically it's a mixed bag, opening promisingly with a dark, mournful electric folk number, 'Wandering town', before taking in traditional Cornish folklore, classical guitar themes, showtunes, heavy rock and more. Along the way there are some good folk tracks, including he gentle 'Neptune' and gorgeous Reality From Dream-style 'Full Circle'."

Vinyl

VG+: There are some light surface scuffs and as you can hear from the sound clips a small amount of surface noise in parts, as well as the occasional pop. There are no major scratches and marks and the labels are nice and clean. I have a stone mint copy of this LP that was only played once, and that also contains a small amount of noise, probably due in part to relatively cheap Sentinel pressing.

Sleeve

VG+: No tears and all in tact. There are some brown marks, which appear to be down to aging rather than stains. There is some minor splitting on the spine.

A rare opportunity to grab this highly sought after LP!
