There is nothing quite like Neil Young seeing or hearing Neil Young in person. There is a distinct separation from his studio work. Neil knew that Live Performance offered he and his group an opportunity to express their own brand of R&R that simply did not exist in the Studio.

Our above comment is not to suggest that you will not recognize the 3 songs made famous by earlier releases (Everybody Knows....., Down By The River, and Cowgirl in The Sand). Perhaps the best we can do in words is to convey that Neil Young can put across 3 chord R&R as all but a few and in our view Neil is more consistent in his performances than any others that come to mind. It is a joy to hear he and group expound on their melody line.
Neil is a very special person when viewed from the business side of R&R. There is a wonderful publication (book) entitled "Mansions in The Sky" that delves into that side of the Music Business. In discussing the music business, the author makes his points by choosing 3 musicians from the center of R&R who ultimately insisted on their artistic independence. Those 3 are Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Bruce Springstein. It took some time for Bruce and Neil to come around, but they most certainly did and it wasn't so long. If you listened to Neil with the Buffalo Springfield, or in the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young group then put this on the Turntable you might find it hard to believe that such a short time before 1970 in terms of years, Neil had sounded so very tame. Well, all is relative to something. It is not so easy to record in the studio. In fact, it is quite a challenge. Yet, it is not so simple to put on a great live show as Neil did. We learned with this release several years ago that Neil was up to it and then some.
We've read a number of reviews of Neil in concert Live at Madison Square Garden over the years. With rare exception, Neil has continued to play NYC at least once yearly. The reviewers always tried to get across what an experience it was. He never failed to receive great reviews which is not the easiest achievement in itself with the music critics at the NY Times where we read those reviews. Those who take in the music scene in NYC do, after all, have plenty of live music to compare Neil to. We recall being surprised at how high the accolades were when we first picked up on those reviews. Then we became accustomed to them. Yet until we heard this record we cannot say we could truly understand except by imagining. Music is The language, and one unto itself. We can say no more. Great Collectible and Highly recommended.
