New York Dolls - Live Dallas '74 (Vinyl, 1978, bootleg, Smilin' Ears 7707).
OK, first things first. As is often the case, the descriptions/claims on bootlegs are not accurate. This was not recorded in 1974. On the dates claimed on the jacket -- September 16-19, 1974 -- the Dolls are preforming at Ebbets Field in Denver. This was recorded at Gertie's in Dallas, where the Dolls performed September 17-20, 1973.
As with bootlegs generally, packaging is minimal. There is a non-gatefold jacket and a plain white inner sleeve . . . although the jacket of this record is less flimsy than on many bootlegs.
The record is in good shape -- some corner and spine wear as you'd expect with a 40+ year-old record, but otherwise in excellent shape. The label on Side 2 is very slightly off center so the record looks weird when you see it spinning, but I don't detect any warping and honestly, hard to imagine anything would affect the crummy recording quality.
The record plays well, BUT -- be aware -- the sound quality is bad. This sounds like it was recorded by someone with a hand-held cassette recorder. Still you get a little of a feel for the Dolls' crazy doomed energy and aggressive goofiness, which comes off as sincere for all that. You do get a lot of David Johansen's pouty, flirty, streety banter between songs.
Not a great live album, not even a great Dolls' artifact. But Dolls' artifacts are few and far between, so this poorly-recorded, mislabeled mishmash is more important than it might otherwise be.
