songs include black and tan fantasy, chelsea bridge, cherokee, epistrophy, blackbird, raggy waltz, jump the blues, rockin' chair, c-jam blues, sunny side of the street, and many others.
Another Contemporary Masters release was entitled "Newport Jazz Festival--1956,1958,1961." Unfortunately it was only available for a little more than one year. Included were very rare live unreleased festival performances by Louis Armstrong, Ben Webster, Sonny Stitt, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and many more. These four acetates (four sides, with two discs having redone sides) have some amazing and historic performances. In mint condition as it was only played once in the mastering lab at CBS studios. They have not been played more than once and the sides are all in the range of excellent to very-good-plus.
Almost 40 years ago, I worked as a producer at Columbia Records. Much of the work was with the jazz roster--including the deep and illustrious history of this company through its reissue programs, "Contemporary Masters" and "Jazz Masterpieces." This acetate/test pressing comes from my personal collection along with any information I may have written on the jacket. In many cases, we cut several generations of masters before we (and especially the artists) were happy with the final sound. Mastering is a very important step in the final production of a recording session. In most cases, this is the only copy that was "cut," and it was passed along to executives and artists for their signed approval. The sale of this acetate does not include any inherent rights, nor are they imploied. The recordings and music are owned by the record label and/or artists. To commercially release this material would violate those rights.
