La band si è formata dal frontman Nick Cave con il multi stumentalista Mick Harvey e il chitarrista Blixa Bargeld. La formazione attuale invece è con Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey, Jim Sclavunos, Thomas Wydler Conway Savage e George Vjestica.
