Description
Palm pink rim Island label. Timings of the songs in brackets. “Island Records Ltd” on right hand side of label. Joe Boyd production credit printed on two lines. Does not have stereo on the label (see photos).
Only two pressings of this LP were released in Nick Drake’s lifetime and this is the rarer of the two. According to a certain online source (you know the one, we all go there for information on pressing variations and values) over 1000 of its members have the 1st pressing and only 184 have this, the 1st repress (accurate at time of writing). It was released with two sleeve variations – textured or matt and this has the matt sleeve.
I’ve cleaned and played the record on my Yamaha PF800 turntable (quality suspended sub-chassis deck) with an Ortofon MC10 Super MC cartridge.
Side One plays Ex+ with just a couple of soft ticks (that’s all I heard) and one click to the run-out groove (after the music, so doesn’t really count IMHO).
On side two I noticed a slight edge undulation (not apparent on side one) which is of no audio consequence and is not present after the first track (I also played this track on a simpler budget deck to double check and the arm/stylus wasn’t disturbed in any way). Track one, which is an instrumental, has some repetitive soft ticks and a few medium clicks. Overall this side has a some more background noise than side one (I’m specifically listening out for it so I notice it more) but it still plays to a high standard, but not as good as side one. I’d grade this side VG to VG+.
The matt single slip cover is VG+ with just a little rubbing to the top and spine (see close-up photos).
Will be well packaged for safe transit.
