In 1952 Polish refugees, Michael and Nathalie Kulakowski, started a record label so that communities of displaced Europeans could access the music, and through it the memories, of their homeland on the other side of the world. When the Carinia label celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1977 it was the biggest privately owned record company in Australia.
The concept of ‘home’ was central to Carinia. The name itself is derived from an aboriginal word relating to home. In the '70s the label was responsible for interesting contemporary releases that are now prized by record collectors including the Ritual LP from Nico Gomez and his Afro Percussion Inc. and the Jimi Hendrix one off curiosity No Such Animal.
