Very limited and rare release on top knotch quality vinyl. Sounds absolutely incredible. Second Battle always delivers quality but unfortunately they are very hard to come by now and are now collectible releases.

Album & Band Info 

Mind-boggling , earth shattering , acid-soaked firing squad of an album. If you’ve done any trolling around the internet in search of highly regarded obscurities, you’ve probably run across some info on this one album German act. More than another band of the ear from their locale, this offshoot of the more prolific Kin Ping Meh is regarded as one the heaviest, most crazed and brave acts of the seventies. The evidence for these allegations lies in only one album titled Mournin’, but I gotta back the chorus of approval up. This record is friggin’ nuts. 

Now just how the band got from their roots as a jazz outfit called Take Five (after the famous Dave Brubeck hit) to performing progressive, hyperactive visionary metal complete with slashing, thrashing guitars, arrangements that would impress King Crimson and hysterically crazed singing, remains a mysterious eventuality. But true it is, and Mournin’ succeeds not only due to the qualities mentioned above, but also due to the fact that over 30 years after it’s release, it’s still a unique quantity. You’d have to dig deep into the wacky realms of eccentric progressive rock such as Magma or Gentle Giant to find songs as oddly built as those here, but you’ll still rarely find them matched with the will to kill power that Night Sun willfully wielded. 

As for the specifics, “Got A Bone Of My Own” arises from an eerie atmospheric opening to drop a morose riff Sabbath could have been proud of before shifting into an up-tempo section of keyboard driven solace. “Plastic Shotgun” is just plain insane, the band playing a busy, un-melodic blues based riff as fast as possible, while the vocals yelp and squall accordingly. Surely there was little out there like it in good old ’72. “Slush Pan Man” (no idea what this title means) downshifts into another doomy riff, and in its less frantic execution this becomes one of the platter’s more accessible moments, despite its Adams Family ambience. The same goes for “Blind,” which actually executes a fairly normal Deep Purple chugging organ guitar pace to fine effect (think “Black Night,” only evil). But the top of the song food chain here for me is the harrowing “Living With The Dying,” a morbid little gem blessed with both more creepy music and distressed singing that illustrates it’s lyrical acridity. It’s on cuts like this that the jazz agility of these players becomes most useful, turning tempos and riffs into the means to deliver genuinely disconcerting moods. And just for the record, in the course of the album’s nine tracks, only one (“Come Down”) is inarguably mellowed out, a high batting average of wattage for its time. So from all angles, Mournin’ deserves it’s sometimes hyperbolic reputation as an undeservedly shelved classic, and really ought to be heard by anyone with even a cursory interest in all things heavy, metallic and seriously rock related.

But it hardly sold a mint back in the day, and for well on three decades it remains a record that only a few had heard but was never forgotten by those lucky to have dug it. This has made the original vinyl a highly collectible nugget, and to date there seems to have been only one CD issue that’s equally pricey. Even high profile websites have been known to charge in excess of $100 for a digital copy, which forces one to wonder why a successive CD pressing hasn’t been made available. Clearly there’s freaks out there like you and me who want one, so let’s get it together people!
