Description
This lot contains nine 10-inch 78 RPM records featuring Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, all in the 1920's jazz genre, and all on the Victor "scroll" label. Please note, however, that one of the 18 sides is not by Paul Whiteman, so please pay attention as you read through the list of titles. All 18 sides are included in Brian Rust's "American Dance Band Discography", but I won't bore you with all the details, unless I see some discographic information I feel an irresistible need to share. I have noted, however, (in parentheses) the five titles that are considered "hot" enough for inclusion in Rust's "Hot Jazz Discography." Also, sides are instrumental except when a vocal credit is listed (also in parentheses), and - apart from the one by Nat Shilkret - the label credit for the band is "Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra".
All nine are shown in the first picture, then individually, both sides, in the following order:
Victor # 20007 - "Valencia"; and "No More Worryin'" (with "vocal refrain" on both sides). (The B side is listed in Rust's "Hot Jazz", with a recording date of March 26, 1926.)
Victor # 20508 - "Muddy Water" (vocal by Bing Crosby); and "Ain't She Sweet" (vocal by Franklyn Baur) by Nat Shilkret and His Victor Orchestra. (Both sides are listed in Rust's "Hot Jazz", with recording dates in March, 1927.)
Victor # 22885 - "Sylvia" and "Vilia" (vocal by Jack Fulton on both sides).
Victor # 20627 - "Side by Side" and "Pretty Lips" (with Bing Crosby part of the "vocal refrain" on both sides). (The A side is listed in Rust's "Hot Jazz", with a recording date of April 29, 1927.)
Victor # 25135 - "A Picture of Me Without You" (vocal by Ramona and Ken Derby); and "Me and Marie" (vocal by the King's Men).
Victor # 24517 - "Wagon Wheels" and "If I Love Again" (vocal by Bob Lawrence on both sides).
Victor # 21214 - "Ramona" (vocal by Austin Young); and "Lonely Melody." (The B side is listed in Rust's "Hot Jazz", with a recording date of January 4, 1928, with Bix Beiderbecke playing cornet on both sides.)
Victor # 20881 - "Just a Memory"; and "Cheerie Beerie Bee" (vocal by Austin Young).
Victor # 20972 - "Dancing Tambourine"; and "A Shady Tree" (vocal by Mildred Hunt).
In the order listed, they visually range in condition from about VG+ or better down to about VG, getting less and less shiny, with more and more visible surface wear, as you go down the list. I played them all on my Audio-Technica turntable, and there were only two forward jumps (no repeats), one in the middle of "Pretty Lips", the other in "Me and Marie." Otherwise, there was mostly just typical light background noise, but with some scattered clicks and pops and passages of ticking. Because of variations in tracking ability, filtering technology and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well they will play on your equipment. Please also check the pictures for label damage including inscriptions and stickers.
