The spirit of the Vikings

Norwegian folk music, Bergen festival preview program

Eva Le Gallienne (1899-1991) was a distinguished British-born American stage actress, producer, director, translator, and author. She was a prominent figure in the American theater during the 20th century, known for her dedication to the art of the theater and her efforts to promote high-quality dramatic productions.

Eva Le Gallienne is connected to the Vikings through her role in the film "The Vikings" (1958). In this historical epic, she played the character Enid, who is the mother of Princess Morgana, portrayed by Janet Leigh. Although her role in the movie was not as prominent as those of Kirk Douglas or Tony Curtis, her participation added to the film's depth and gravitas, leveraging her esteemed acting skills and theatrical experience.

Eva Le Gallienne had a significant connection to Henrik Ibsen through her work as an actress and director, particularly her dedication to performing and promoting Ibsen's plays. Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) was a renowned Norwegian playwright and poet, often referred to as the "father of modern drama."

Le Gallienne was known for her passion for Ibsen's works and became one of the foremost interpreters of his plays in the American theater. She directed and starred in many of his plays, contributing to the revival and appreciation of his work in the United States. Her performances in Ibsen's plays, such as "Hedda Gabler," "A Doll's House," "The Master Builder," and "Ghosts," were critically acclaimed and helped establish Ibsen's plays as staples of serious American theater.

Her dedication to Ibsen's works was part of her broader mission to elevate the quality of American theater and to introduce audiences to important European playwrights. Through her efforts, Le Gallienne played a key role in fostering a greater appreciation for Ibsen's contributions to modern drama.
