Up for auction is a rare, early Heritage Records 45 8-8875A/B release of Nova's Nine Pain/Why Listen. From some online research, only 500 copies of this record were released on the Heritage Records label out of Charlotte, NC (recorded at Arthur Smith Studios) prior to being picked up by ABC Paramount. Check out http://southernsoulcollector.blogspot.com/2013/10/novas-nine.html for good overview of this group with reference to the Heritage Records version of this "Northern Soul" classic. I know very little about the art of grading records, but will do my best to provide a complete rundown/overview of the condition of this record. Starting with the label, this copy has nice bold colors with some minor discoloration and light wear. Previous owners initials are written on both sides of the label (not too distracting) and there is a very small amount of sticker residue from where a label has been on the left of the Pain side of the record (hardly noticeable unless examined at an angle under light). The record itself would grade in the VG range in my opinion (see photos and judge for yourself). There are scattered scratches and scuffs throughout both side of the record, but overall the record retains a glossy/reflective surface. Looking very closely at the edge, I found a couple very tiny rim flea bites (see photos) - these do not affect the play and are barely even noticeable. When playing the record, it plays through on both sides without any skips or hanging. There is noticeable scratching on the intro on both sides, but once it gets into the music, the music is predominant and the scratching isn't distracting in my opinion (provides a pleasant listening experience overall with some pops and scratches). Although this copy isn't perfect and has some scratches and wear, it is still a solid copy of a hard-to-find Northern Soul 45 and would make an excellent addition to any collection.
