GINGER ALE
IN THE SAND
THE SEVENTH FLOOR
Pip 8930
GRADE: VG++
DESCRIPTION: I don't know where I found this killer record, but I wish I could go back to that place and see if they had more of this kind of stuff! Here's a group (not even listed in any of my record manuals) that sounds like a different set of performers on each side--and both sides outstanding! The A side is definitely by a British group--at least that's what it sounds like! In fact, they have a close resemblance to the Beatles! In the Sand is a cheerful Beatles-type tune just delightful in its performance, and with the group singing in definite Beatles-type accents. The song could be inserted into a Beatles album and it could easily be accepted by anyone but a true Beatlefile! HOWEVER, flip the record over and there's no British accents! They sound American--at least to my very sharp ear! And besides that, the song goes from a cheerful, happy tune to a dark, minor-key number that turns out to be a real deep, philosophical killer! The song is incredible! And the group sings it with real thought and beauty. (The composers of this song, in case someone knows of any of the names, are: R. DeBois, R. Beekman, and W. Luikinga, while the composer of Side A is A.V. Olm.) It takes a real stretch of believability to accept the fact that both sides are sung by the same group. Talk about versatility! And talk about fantastic! Don't know what happened to them (other than that they recorded on probably one of the most obscure labels in the world), but I dare say I really hate getting rid of this record! That's saying a lot, since my main interests have always been in the '50s and some early '60s music. Who wants to bid on this super-rare bit of devastation! This is for the collector who has everything and wants that certain disk to bring his collection to life!
CONDITION: The record would have been in mint condition if the "pricer" at the sale where I bought it hadn't written the price (3 for 20¢) on the sleeve while it still had the record in it! As a result, the ballpoint pen made a very slight, visible-only-in-a-certain-light impression on the record; luckily the "pricer" didn't press hard enough to do any damage, and the record, other than that, looks like new. There's a sticker on the A side denoting the record was a promotional copy. Looks great and plays like new!
