* O'BYRNE DeWITT IRISH RECORD *
This is a 10" 78 rpm Irish Record (#39025) from O'Byrne Dewitt, the first record label to convince a U.S. recording company to record and sell "Authentic Irish music, played by Authentic Irish musicians". In 1917, a young Irish woman named Ellen O'Byrne, went to Columbia records and contracted to personally sell 500 copies of the album if they would give the Irish musicians a chance to play their own music. Columbia had previously always used studio musicians (mostly German and English), and had only recorded "popular American-Irish" tunes. They agreed to give it a try and out of that agreement was born the O'Byrne Dewitt label. The two artists on this record, Tom Ennis on pipes & John Garrity on violin, were among the earliest to record on the label. On one side is an Irish Polka and on the other, a Medley of Reels.
My records have been graded by a knowledgeable, longtime collector of 78 records and I have asked him to grade on the conservative side so that I may guarantee everything I sell to be at or better than its rating.
