Well this is fun: My friend Rick, who co- managed Anaheim’s Beggar’s Banquet Records with me back in the macramé days, finished digging through his trove of 45s from then, and unearthed a second and final copy of this rare SoCal Orange County punk classic from 1979, "Death To Disco” backed with “I Hate Myself," two wonderfully snotty songs from local North OC fellas who you can tell loved the Who at least as much as the Pistols. Guitarist/singer Dave Guccione worked at the county’s big record wholesaler, Brown Records, which is also where a member of another of this week’s rare OC offerings, Big Beat, worked.
The 45—No. 303 on the Chateau East label--comes with its kinda ratty but uber-rare picture sleeve, which is simply a folded over piece of paper.
Along with having lots of crinkly fold marks and some small tears, there is a round red mark from where this had sat next to a red-labeled 45 for years. The cover had been stored separately from the record, and the record was his backup copy. It was never played until now, which I did to assure it sounds as good as it looks, which is very damn good.
There are a couple of minor blemishes in the vinyl on the A “Death to Disco” side, and they probably account for the two small pops you can hear during instrumental sections early in the song. Those pops aside, it plays perfectly, as does the B “I Hate Myself” side in its entirety, all clear and scratch free.
The label still has a sticker from Beggar’s Banquet Records. We were one of very few OC stores to even stock punk records back then. You might as well leave the sticker on for history’s sake, because after this many years, the sticker is sure to leave a mark if you remove it.
