GRADING EXPECTATIONS FOR BUYERS
For every auction/listing, there will always be two forms of grading. A visual grade and a play grade.
We strive to maintain accuracy to visual grading, but also accuracy to how a record sounds when played for a realistic expectation that a buyer will be confident in the record they purchase.
All records are played and tested. All records are either VPI cleaned or Spin-Cleaned to showcase the record and is graded carefully by ear and under proper lighting after cleaning.
Our grading scale may be “broad”, but the most detailed descriptions of a record and cover’s condition are complimented well with the classic grades on a plus/minus scales like Goldmine, but we also use descriptive words like “Strong” or “Weak” i.e. Strong EX, Weak EX, Strong VG or Weak VG for example.
Wax Grade Scale
Sealed: Sealed in shrink wrap or baggy. Often can be presumed mint, but truthfully the record condition is unknown and is sold as is. Always purchase with confidence.
NM (Near Mint): Appears unplayed. No marks, scratches or imperfections. We rarely use this.
NM- (Near Mint Minus): Appears unplayed. Perhaps ever-so slightly the smallest individual tiny wisp, paper mark or spindle mark. Not used often.
EX+ (Excellent Plus): Little evidence of play. No more than just a couple marks that are barely noticeable under-light. No playback interference. Only a spindle mark or two noticeable.
EX (Excellent): Little evidence of play. Just a few marks that are superficial. No playback interference. Only a spindle mark or two.
EX- (Excellent Minus): Little evidence of play. Just a few marks that are superficial. No playback interference. Slightly more spindle marks.
VG++ (Very Good Plus Plus): Super nice shape. No more than a handful of scattered paper marks/wisps/smudges throughout. No playback interference. Some minor spindle marks or wear/potential label marks or wear.
VG+ (Very Good Plus): Clean overall. Scattered marks throughout, not abundant at all. Likely no playback noise, will be noted if so. Only minor/inconsistent limited to just a couple of marks if any playback noise. Some spindle marks and potential label wear, but still minimal.
STRONG VG (Strong Very Good): More imperfections than a VG+. No more than a few spots where noise may be heard with scattered superficial marks. Some spindle marks and potential label wear, but still minimal.
VG (Very Good): More imperfections than a STRONG VG. A handful of spots where noise may be heard with superficial marks. Spindle mark wear/potentially more label wear.
Weak VG (Weak Very Good): More imperfections/marks than just VG. Superficial marks throughout, potentially one to two feelable marks that cause only minimal playback interference, i.e. gentle pops/ticks.
VG- (Very Good Minus): Visible imperfections/marks/scuffs and potentially several feelable marks. Expect audible surface noise to be present with the feelables, otherwise playing decent throughout the superficials.
G+ (Good Plus): Numerous marks/scuffs/imperfections throughout. Handful of feelable marks. More significant spindle and label wear. Playback interference i.e. distortion, crackling, pops, ticks with some of the superficial marks/feelables.
G (Good): Abundant marks/scuffs/imperfections. Potentially scattered feelables all causing playback interference, i.e. repetitive pops, ticks, crackle. Superficial marks causing crackling throughout record entirety. Moderate spindle and label wear.
G- (Good Minus): Many marks, feelables scattered throughout all causing playback interference, i.e. pops, ticks, crackle, distortion throughout record entirety. Heavy label wear/spindle wear.
Cover Grade Scale
M (Mint): Rarely will be used. Still sealed. 4 SHARP corners. No creases, splits, marks or handling wear.
NM (Near Mint): A nearly perfect cover. Likely still sealed, or open in shrink with almost no evidence of wear. Mostly sharp corners and no creases/surface marks/splits.
EX (Excellent): A beautiful cover with minor signs of handling. Ever-so slightly the smallest amount of creasing, surface marks, corner rubbing. No splits.
VG++ (Very Good Plus Plus): A bit more visible wear than an EX-cover such as more noticeable small creasing, corner rubbing, surface marks. VERY minor chipping or seam wear. Potential bubbling in laminate. Price stickers. No splits.
VG+ (Very Good Plus): The most common grade for our album covers, showing light handling wear, potential very minor ring wear, or small corner dings/corner rubbing. Mild aging or discoloration. Light seam wear and chipping. Laminate bubbling, tearing. Minor stains Potential pen writing. If any splits, only 1 or 2, less than an inch in length. Spine clear and readable.
VG (Very Good): Cover shows more obvious signs of handling, such as light/moderate ring wear, numerous creases, chunks of missing laminate, moderate chipping, seam wear. Mild/Moderate aging or discoloration. Potential pen writing. Minor stains. Light seam splitting on the edges, no longer than 2-3 inches. Spine mostly readable.
VG- (Very Good Minus): Similar to VG but with more extensive wear, including larger seam splits, nothing full length across seam. Pen writing. Laminate peeling throughout. Moderate staining. Moderate ring wear. Moderate discoloration. Possible moisture bowing/tearing. More significant creases, or moderate/heavy spine wear. Album artwork may have small paper loss/tears.
G+ (Good Plus): Numerous surface marks, lots of pen writing, heavy creasing, heavy seam wear rubbing. Moderate/heavy ring wear. Moisture damage affecting a large part of cover. Multiple places of album cover art tears/paper loss. Splits may be across full length of seam, usually just one side. Heavy discoloration or aging. Splitting occurring on spine, barely visible or unreadable title/catalog.
G (Good): Significantly worn cover with distinguishable damage like major tears on album cover art, scuffing, or writing throughout. Splitting almost completely on spine, top seam or bottom seam. Heavy ring wear. Moisture damage affecting potentially whole cover/one complete side. Heavy tears/paper loss.
G- (Good Minus): Damaged cover that may be completely split on multiple sides, AKA, the book or taco cover. Significant scuffing, stickers, stains, pen ink. Heavy ring wear. Extreme fading, aging, discoloration.
P (Poor): Split all the way around. AKA, the sandwich cover. Moisture damage having ruined most of entire cover, if not entire cover. Major paper loss/complete disfiguration of cover that may cause cover to be barely recognizable. Staining that covers majority of record.
NOTE: I will rarely ever post records with a vinyl condition below G- such as Fair, Worn, or Poor on eBay. Exceptions would be incredibly scarce or valuable albums. Nor will I ever likely post a record that skips here. If ever we showcase a record of those conditions, you might find it on our social media page! Please follow us and checkout Instagram @thevinyl_stooge as we intend to utilize our social media to post not only what's going on eBay for sale, but also, we will post acquired records of extreme rarity. We will do this to bring to knowledge the awesome music that's out there that you may never have heard of before! Should there ever be a desire from one of our followers for a showcased record on Instagram, feel free to DM us for details for those specific albums and if the interest is strong, we may post on eBay.
Combined Shipping:
I will combine shipping for multiple records purchased. Typically, for each additional record purchased, it will be $1.25 additional as this helps cover the added media mail weight along with larger mailers.
