Here's a description: Parisian producer Oklou delivers a searing collection of experimental-infused pop music. Packed with avant-garde R&B bangers, haunting ballads and a captivating narrative, « Galore » stands as her most cohesive, confident and powerful work to date.
Okay, on top of all the things that hit me hard this year, this record is gonna have a special spot. There is something different about « Galore ». Whether it is the gripping narration, its grace or its modernity I have no idea. It could be many other things.
Marylou Mayniel has been releasing music under her Oklou moniker since 2014, often waltzing at the frontiers of experimental sonorities and pop aspirations. From the peak-time yet beatless trance heights of 2014’s « Defeat » to the majestic pop melancholia of 2018’s « Friendless », through an ambient video game soundtrack (written in collaboration with Krampf), Mayniel has grown into a fascinating polymath composer and performer.
Capturing the baroque and experimental grandeur of producers like Daniel Lopatin or Arca, and making it exist within ravishing and heterogenous forms of pop music, « Galore » feels like a turning point in Oklou’s journey and her most striking and cohesive piece of work to date. Yet, and despite a sense of expansive majesty, it never ceases to feel like a bedroom-pop record, crafted in an era where the bedroom became an almost limitless environment for creation. Even in its most opulent moments, through silences or deluges of synths, Mayniel’s songwriting encapsulates a feeling of closeness and intimacy that makes you listen to a record as if its story was whispered directly into your ear.
I don’t think incredible records will ever stop being shaped in heartbreak, in a sense that transcends a solely romantic lecture of the word. The hauntingly short « Asturias » feels like those memories that never really leave you, the ones you just have to learn and live with and allow to be a part of you. And while a true resilient melancholy sprinkles what Oklou decided to call a mixtape, some truly grandiose pieces of avant-garde R&B — the breathtaking single « Unearth Me » and its stunning video directed by Kevin Elamrani-Lince or the jaw-dropping hit « Girl on my throne » boosted with added production from A.G Cook — coexist harmoniously with near-ASMR narration and devastating ballads that make « Galore » such a powerful and immersive experience.
Oklou has neatly gathered everything to get you through a deep and masterful piece of post-modern pop music, a dream-like journey spent with eyes wide open, delivered with such panache that I have now given up counting the nights spent listening to « Galore » over the past few months, and I’m pretty sure that soon you will too.
