Oliver Nelson—accomplished saxophone player, inventive improviser, and busy arranger/composer—is featured on this original New Jazz album.
Johnny “Hammond” Smith’s organ cooks and Lem Winchester’s vibes add an intriguing harmonic voice to the rhythm section, which includes George Tucker, bass; and the talented Roy Haynes, drums.
This monophonic recording was issued as Prestige/New Jazz 8233 in 1960. The label is purple with silver printing. This is a DEEP GROOVE pressing, with RVG stamped in the deadwax area (recording by Rudy Van Gelder.).
Side A includes 1) Oliver Nelson’s tribute, “’Trane Whistle” 2) Sonny Rollins’s “Doxy” 3) Nelson’s tune “In Time”. Side B includes 1) “Lou’s Good Dues,” which Nelson wrote for drummer Louie Bellson 2) The standard “All the Way” 3) Nelson’s rhythmic “Groove”.
I play-graded this album VG++. While the mono sound is excellent, there is light surface noise on Side One noticeable at the beginning and again on Side Two noticeable at the beginning and on Track 2. While it is noticeable, it does not distract from the music.

Visually, under bright light, the vinyl still has a good shine, but there are a few minor scuffs and hairline scratches. I graded it VG+ to VG++.
The cover grades VG++. The cover graphic is very sharp; there is very little edge wear, only a couple of minor flaws and corner dings.
