The band was formed in the early 1960s by four musicians from Putney, South London. Initially named The Drag Set, they released a little-known single in 1967, Day and Night/Get Out of My Way. Shortly thereafter, they changed their name to The Open Mind and in 1969 they released this self-titled LP .

Released in 1969 by Philips, this London group’s sole album has long been an obscure collector’s item, revered as the apotheosis of the prog-psych that evolved out of the mid-1960s freakbeat sound typified by such bands as the Yardbirds, the Attack and the Creation. Largely ignored by the record-buying public in its day. perhaps because of its dopey cover , carrying THIS GREAT HEAD OF ‘CHARIOTEER OF DELPHI (ATTICA, LONDON)?

The opening track, “Dear Louise”, has the sinuous riffing and driving beat which we find much more on this album in songs like Soul and my will” and “my mind cries”, with lots of distortion and the chorus is sweetened (slightly) by rough group harmonies. Great to start with! As said “My Mind Cries” employs the same formula, but features a great guitar solo in the middle and exciting drums to end with. “Can’t You See” tries a slightly slower tempo. “Try Another Day” retains the harmonies and features a slightly heavier guitar sound. this track carries some effect on the vocals here, other vocal-experiments they did on “Soul and my will” and I feel the same way too”.  

On the record’s two longer songs, “I Feel the Same Way Too” and “Free as the Breeze”, things get slightly spookier. On the former, curdling falsetto verses about waking trees and weeping skies set the stage for a meandering middle section pilfered from Disraeli Gears. The latter is a simmering cauldron of mock sitar lines, pounding tom-toms, and chanted vocals about the soul, all culminating with a meditative guitar solo over processional drums. True to the band’s budding prog instincts, two songs adopt mythological themes: “Thor, the Thunder God” and “Horses and Chariots”. Probably the best vocals are on “before my time”, supported by great guitar again and additional trippy sound layers. . 

RECORD LOOKS MARVELLOUS. IT WAS KEEPT BY ITS OWNER FOR A LONG TIME BUT HARDLY PLAYED. GROOVES AND SPINDLE HOLE LOOK UNTOUCHED. NO SCRATCHES, MARKS OR ANYTHING. SINCE I AM A STRICT GRADER I GRADE THE VINYL A STRONG VG++. THE LABELS ON BOTH SIDES ARE CLEAN. NO NAMES, DRAWINGS OR ANYTHING. THE SLEEVE IS IN HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE CONDITION AS WELL, AND I IS GRADED EX MINUS. WE ALL KNOW THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST-LOVED BRITISCH PSYCHEDELIC ALBUMS OF ALL TIME.
