OPEN ROAD
"WINDY DAZE"
Greenwich Gramophone Company GSLP 1001
Rare Original 1971 UK First Pressing LP Of This Wonderful Pastoral Progressive Psych Folk-Rock LP By Donovan's Former Backing Band.
Musically and melodically this is simply one of the best albums in the whole UK progressive/folk-psych genre from any period!!!
Very Rare UK Progressive Folk Rock Album By The Legendary Early 70's UK Psych Prog-Folk Rock Band OPEN ROAD Who Included In Their Line-Up Former Members Of DONOVAN'S Backing Group. A Wonderful Album Featuring A Delightful Eclectic Mix Of Mellow Pastoral Psych / Folk, Prog Touches And Melodic Rural Rock In A Similar Vein To Northwind, Heron, Paper Bubble, Aubrey Small Etc...
Produced by renowned rock producer, Tony Reeves (ex-Colosseum bassist), Open Road were the very first progressive group to be signed to the short lived Greenwich Gramophone Company label (a subsidiary of Decca Records) in 1971. Their music reflects feelings of anti-establishment prevalent amongst the young at that time, and was quite visionary in its approach. The members of the band consist of 'Candy' John Carr - Drums, Percussion and Vocals. Barry Husband - Acoustic and Lead Guitar, Bass and Vocals. Simon Lanzon - Keyboards, Piano, Accordion and Vocals and Mike Thomson - Bass, 12 String Guitar and Vocals. Producers - Tony Reeves and Open Road. Engineers - Robin Black and George Chiantz. Recorded at Olympic Sound Studios and Morgan, April 1971. Cover Design - Scribble, Doug Smith and Open Road.
A truly great album that without question falls into the 'LOST CLASSIC' category and is very seldom seen these days!! Don't Miss It!!

CONDITION
Gatefold Sleeve: Near Excellent
The fragile matt textured gatefold cover is graded at near excellent due to some slight wear on the spine and some little seam rubbing (not bad!). Inside of the lovely gatefold is clean and unmarked. There is a very tiny sticker removal tear near top left, some scuffing along the spine, and rubbing on the top and lower seams. The front and back of the sleeve have just a few light marks while the inside of the gatefold is very clean and virtually unmarked. Overall a lovely example of this fragile and beautiful vintage uk early 1970's gatefold cover.
Polylined Inner Sleeve: Excellent
Original first pressing 'Made in England....UK Patents' Blue and White poly-lined inner sleeve has only a few light creases
Labels: Mint-
Clean labels with NO marks, NO stickers, NO unwanted writing and only a couple of very feint spindle traces. This LP has had very little play!!
Vinyl: Excellent (+)
The thick heavyweight vinyl (this is a superb high quality UK early 70's Decca pressing) still retains its original DEEP, GLOSSY SHEEN. The audio is CRYSTAL CLEAR, STRONG and VIBRANT - A WONDERFUL LP. There are NO jumps, NO sticks, NO scratches and only a very few feint wispy hairlines visible under a strong light. There is some minor light surface noise on the run-ins and in a couple of other places. Nothing too major and certainly nothing which I found too intrusive on play-grading this FABULOUS LP. The album plays to a very high standard with superb audio clarity, NO discernible groove-wear and NO distortion (it has seen very little play in the near 40 years I have owned it) and must be graded at least EXCELLENT (+). A superb original pressing of this very rare and great UK 70's psych/folk/prog album.
A GREAT LP WHICH PLAYS BEAUTIFULLY!!
Notes
Here we have a VERY RARE original 1971 UK Greenwich Gramophone Company (a tiny subsidiary of Decca) 1st PRESS of this Warm Sounds/Haphash & Coloured Coat/Donovan related band. The record comes housed in a lovely matt textured gatefold cover graded as near EX due to some slight wear at spine and seams (not bad!). Inside of gatefold is very clean. The disc as well is a great EX + at least, GREAT near flawless playback sound.
Rare original 1971 UK Brown & White labels Greenwich Gramophone Company (GSLP 1001) FIRST (and only) UK PRESSING of the OPEN ROAD LP entitled "WINDY DAZE" recorded at Olympic Sound and Morgan Studios, April 1971.
Open Road were first assembled by Donovan for his 1970 album, Open Road. Initially, it was only him along with Mike O'Neil (keyboards), Mike Thomson (bass), and John Carr (drums). After Donovan left to continue his solo career, the group added Barry Husband (guitar and vocals) and Simon Lanzon (keyboards). Windy Daze was the group's only album together and is an undoubted lost CLASSIC released on the obscure UK Greenwich Gramophone Company record label in 1971. This extremely rare album is packed with great songs, beautiful melodies, exceptional vocal harmonies, and top rate playing. A wonderful mix of evocative electric psych/folk-rock, rural progressive rock with psychy guitar flashes, lovely keyboard playing. This is truly wonderful album, with prog, folk and psych elements, typical early 70's British feel, great vocals, great playing and ace songwriting. A fabulous album which doesn't turn up too often these days and is extremely hard to find as a UK original first pressing!!
The LP is pressed on quality thick heavyweight vinyl with unmarked brown & white GGC labels. The album comes housed in it's original unlaminated matt textured gatefold sleeve.
An excellent copy of this rare album, a genuine 'LOST CLASSIC' indeed, and one that is very difficult to locate.
