Description

Organum / Eddie Prévost -- Crux / Flayed LP

Original 1987 US release on Silent Records (catalog # SR8704).

Here's an excellent split album of Organum and Eddie Prévost, experimental drones by Organum, and a thunderous drum orientated work by Eddie Prévost of AMM and Scratch Orchestra. I have seen reference to this LP being a limited edition of 500 copies.

Eddie Prévost is a drummer for AMM and is accompanied on his side ('Flayed') by Organum's mainstay, David Jackman, on electronics and bowed cymbal. As Jackman's drones ebb and flow, Prévost builds and subsides. He uses a lot of cymbal splashes and drum rolls with a lot of detailing to bacically make the drum kit act as an orchestra. Like Tony Williams and Paul Motian, Prévost is beyond technique and aims for emotionally provocative sonic experiences. All of them can simultaneously by in sympathy with and yet lead interaction with those sounds around them. The Organum side ('Crux') also offers a lot of interaction through drones from electronic instruments, flutes, and bowed instruments. This is more gentle than most other Organum, and is enjoyable loud or soft. Subtle shifting and changing occurs, creating a fairly relaxing ambience without jarring surprises. Both sides of the album are very enjoyable and worth checking out even if you have heard a lot of previous Organum. The Prévost performance is worth the price of admission.
