FIRST U.S. (1960) PRESSING on Bergenfield NJ label (Red Garland moved to the Riverside Label in 1961); My Prestige Discography  of ALL Series book lists this Red Garland  Quintet RECORDING session as taking place on November 15, 1957.

This is the seminal SOUL JUNCTION LP on Prestige 7181    MONO.

VINYL:  VG+  (well-cared for LP; with very minor surface lines; lots of original luster with that 'rainbow' gleam remains while noting under a strong light; deep groove pressing on BOTH sides; RVG engraved- all indications of a first pressing; and a substantial 'heft' when holding the platter; SIDE B has very slight bubbling to the label at the very outer edge only; other side no issue; typical spindle hole use

Cover: VG+ to VG++  Iconic cover of the Prestige Label!! (Clean; tight; straight & SQUARED---spine edge still very readable; slt 1/2 top at opening seam split--minor ; top corner very slt. mushed a little looking from the backside only--corner edge wear to be expeccted; clean liner note reverse; glossy laminated front paste on cover; ALL SEAMS SMOOTH and unrubbed besides my notes above--obviously a well-cared for Jazz LP..)

MY NOTES: play-graded on my Thorens' rig V15 Shure cart--plays full-bodied; --really  enjoyable--fills the rooms; plays with some intermitent surface noise all the way through in quieter passages during Soul Junction's bluesy piano passage with the typical 'shhh' in QUIETER passages,; Coltranes sax takes care of the rest--as does Byrd's horn. PUNCHES. certainly nothing that disturbed my listening pleasure.. Rich deep base; excellent separation; .plays at full volume and holds, so don't hold back here..quality Van Gelder recording here...

Final Note::  Bottom line, just a really nice, well-cared for original pressing of this seminal jazz session; not the perfect audiophile-fanatic copy --but for most of us, damn excellent jazz addition that will last for years to come---and a surperbly preserved cover with a glossy laminated front cover--icon image of jazz in that very cool orange glow this cover projects when looking at it. . . . .substantial vinyl with the Rudy Gelder engraved in deadwax for assurance of recording fidelity and quality
