ERIC CLAPTON & THE YARDBIRDS
WITH THE BLUES LEGEND AT LONDON'S CRAWDADDY CLUB
THE YARDBIRDS
with Sonny Boy Williamson
\ USA - Mercury Records - SR 61071 Stereo
Rare original 1965 stereo first pressing -- one of the hard finds, as an original pressing with the Yardbirds backing the American blues legend Sonny Boy Williamson. In December 1963, Williamson was in failed health and went on to tour England. He had no back up band, so the Animals backed his your in the northern UK and the Yardbirds backed his tour in southern England. The historical recordings were caught alive at the infamous 'Crawdaddy Club' where the Rolling Stones had started their career as the 'house' band, followed by The Yardbirds.
This is a 1965 Mercury Records original LP of Sonny Boy Williamson, backed by the Yardbirds . The first 9 tracks are from the Crawdaddy Club on 8 December 1963, and the last two are culled from The Star Club, Croydon on 7 December 1963. Sonny Boy, blows a mean harp on these tracks and his singing, while not up to the standards of his recordings from the 50's is passable, .
"Bye, Bye, Bird" is a quick opening number of harp funtastics by Sonny Boy, and then it's right into: "Mister Downchild" with some brisk lead guitar by Eric that is played off Sonny Boy's Harp. "Pontiac Blues" is a favorite cut, Sonny Boy, gives the performance of the night, the vocals are chilling and this IS the blues...Delta Blues with the young Yardbirds, hanging on Sonny's every note...authentic Stuff.
The Yarbirds are featured on "Do The Weston" without Sonny Boy. This one has some nice lead guitar by the Eric Clapton, and Keith Relf is onstage is blowing out his harp.
The recording serves as an historical show featuring a pure blues sound, when soon The Stones, The Yardbirds and the Animals, were gonna do some very new and different things to the sound with wah-wah pedals and fuzz-tones and feedback.
