Hallelujah, Baby! is a unique and ambitious Broadway musical that premiered in 1967. With music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and a book by Arthur Laurents, the show offers a "chronicle of the African American struggle for equality" throughout the 20th century.
The central conceit of the musical is that its main characters—Georgina (Leslie Uggams), her mother Momma (Lillian Hayman), her fiancé Clem (Robert Hooks), and her white friend Harvey (Allen Case)—do not visibly age, even as the decades pass around them from the early 1900s to the 1960s. This allows the audience to witness the evolving social and racial landscape of America through their unchanging eyes.
The story primarily follows Georgina, a talented, beautiful, and ambitious African American woman determined to build a career in show business. Despite her mother's advice to "keep her place" as a maid, Georgina strives for stardom. Her journey takes her through various periods and challenges:
- Early 1900s: Georgina and Momma are maids on a Southern estate, encountering overt racism.
- 1920s: Georgina performs in Harlem nightclubs, facing discrimination even in the entertainment world. Her relationship with Clem, a train porter, develops, while Harvey, a white theatrical producer, offers her opportunities.
- 1930s: The characters navigate the Great Depression and the complexities of the WPA (Works Progress Administration) and the burgeoning civil rights movement.
- 1940s: Georgina performs with USO troops during World War II, confronting segregation even in wartime efforts.
- 1950s-1960s: Georgina achieves success as a singer in a chic supper club, but the musical doesn't shy away from the lingering issues of racial prejudice and the personal compromises she might have made. Clem becomes increasingly involved in the civil rights movement, often clashing with Georgina's assimilationist tendencies.
The musical explores Georgina's personal and professional triumphs and struggles against a backdrop of significant historical changes, including the Civil Rights Movement. It delves into the complexities of identity, ambition, and the pursuit of equality. While ambitious in its themes, the show ultimately aimed to deliver a hopeful and uplifting message about perseverance.
The original Broadway production was notable for its vibrant score, energetic performances, and the groundbreaking presence of Leslie Uggams, who won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Lillian Hayman also won a Tony for Best Featured Actress. Despite a relatively short run, the musical won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1968.
