THE ORNETTE COLEMAN TRIO - AT THE "GOLDEN CIRCLE" STOCKHOLM VOLUME 2

A VG+ copy of this original and rare 1965 first pressing US jazz classic on the coveted BLUE NOTE label, MONO, BLP 4225

 Matrix Numbers :

Side 1  BNLP - 4225 A  with "VAN GELDER" machine stamped and the "ear" (inverted "P" from "Plastylite") etched into run-off grooves

Side 2  BNLP - 4225 B  with "VAN GELDER" machine stamped and the "ear" (inverted "P" from "Plastylite") etched into run-off grooves

The condition of the vinyl is VG+. A nice shine and sheen throughout with no obvious scuffs or wispy hairlines even, not even under a bright light. Remarkable! The only exceptions to this are seven barely noticeable "bubble" heads on side and a further five barely detectable "bubble" heads on side 2, on each side running in a line vertically downwards from the label. I suspect that this is a manufacturing fault and does results in some sporadic mild clicking : I counted 17 on side 1 and 7 on side 2, each not very intrusive and nothing here to significantly detract either from the vinyl appearance or the overall audio quality. This 1960's Blue Note vinyl is renowned for both it's audio quality reproduction and durability and each are in plenty of evidence here.

The labels are NEAR MINT - I just can't fault them at all, not even the usual spindle trace lines - pristine!! Note the text "BLUE NOTE RECORDS INC. NEW YORK USA", again indicative of a very first pressing.

The non-laminated and thick cardboard outer sleeve is VG+. There is barely any scuffing on any of the edges and the corners remain well defined despite some minor creasing on each of the top left and bottom right corners - these are minor blemishes. There is virtually no ring wear (just the merest hint on the reverse side towards the opening edge) and the photo and colours on the front side remain clear and vibrant, with all writing on the reverse side perfectly legible and, remarkably, virtually no age discolouration whatsoever. No tears or splits either. 

Finally, the quality of the audio is an overall VG+. Great MONO tone and clarity with no distortion either at higher volume or on the higher frequencies. There is no background interference and the only blemishes are the aforementioned sporadic background clicks (17 on side 1 and 7 on side 2) due to some tiny bubbling.  Still a super listen throughout with musicians Ornette Coleman (alto sax, violin, trumpet), David Izenzon (bass), and Charles Moffett (drums) at the top of their game.

In summary, an impressive US BLUE NOTE mono first pressing of this rare 1965 jazz classic - highly presentable and a great listen. There can't be too many better copies than this, which is much rarer than the Volume 1 copy.

On the subject of postage, I take great care in the packaging of all items, using a proper vinyl cardboard mailer along with at least two cardboard stiffeners. I take great care in removing the record from the outer sleeve in order to prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection. 

For this item postage & packaging will be Royal Mail 1st class  : UK £3.00, continental Europe £6, and Rest of the World £10.

Mint

Description: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent

Description: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packag­ing might have slight wear and/or creasing.

Very Good

Description: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable sur­face marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

Description: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

Fair 

Description: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for prop­erly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

Poor

Description: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

Bad

Description: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
