This gritty drama, directed by John G. Avildsen, explores the clash between social classes and the rising tensions of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The synopsis revolves around: Bill Compton (Dennis Patrick): A wealthy, conservative advertising executive whose life takes a dark turn when he murders his daughter's drug-dealing boyfriend in a fit of rage. Joe Curran (Peter Boyle): A loudmouthed, bigoted factory worker Bill meets in a bar. Joe is a staunch working-class man with strong, often offensive, opinions against hippies, liberals, and minorities. An Unholy Alliance: Bill confesses his crime to Joe, and instead of turning him in, Joe admires Bill for taking action against the counter-culture he despises. This leads to a bizarre and dangerous bond between the two men from vastly different backgrounds. Searching for the Daughter: When Bill's runaway daughter, Melissa (Susan Sarandon in her film debut), disappears into the drug-filled hippie underworld, he enlists Joe's help to find her. Their search takes them through the fringes of society they both loathe, leading to a shocking and violent conclusion.
