Tangerine Dream – Sorcerer (1977) | MCA-2277 | Original U.S. Soundtrack LP

This is more than a movie soundtrack—it’s one of the great intersections of 1970s cinema and electronic music.

After the enormous success of The Exorcist, director William Friedkin set out to make Sorcerer, his dark and atmospheric reimagining of The Wages of Fear. For the score, he turned to German electronic pioneers Tangerine Dream, whose synthesizer-driven sound was unlike the traditional orchestral scores dominating Hollywood at the time.

What makes the story especially interesting is that Tangerine Dream composed much of the music without working from a finished film. Friedkin gave the group the screenplay and creative direction, and their haunting electronic compositions became part of the filmmaking process itself. The result is a score that feels less like background music and more like another character in the movie—tense, hypnotic and ominous.

Released in 1977, Sorcerer arrived the same year as Star Wars and struggled at the box office, but both the film and its soundtrack have since developed a devoted following. Today the movie is widely regarded as one of Friedkin's most ambitious works, while Tangerine Dream's score stands as an important early example of electronic music being used to drive the atmosphere of a major motion picture.

This original U.S. MCA Records pressing (MCA-2277) is a great piece for Tangerine Dream fans, soundtrack collectors, electronic-music enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates the wonderfully experimental side of 1970s filmmaking.

Put this one on in a dark room and you'll understand why Sorcerer has never really disappeared.
