It was never supposed to be like this: "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay" was supposed to mark a beginning of a new phase in Otis Redding's career, not an ending. Producer/guitarist Steve Cropper had a difficult task to perform in pulling together this album, the first of several posthumous releases issued by Stax/Volt in the wake of Otis Redding's death. What could have been a cash-in effort or a grim memorial album instead became a vivid, exciting presentation of some key aspects of the talent that was lost when Redding died. Dock of the Bay is, indeed, a mixed bag of singles and B-sides going back to July of 1965, one hit duet with Carla Thomas, and a pair of previously unissued tracks from 1966 and 1967, respectively. There's little cohesion, stylistic or otherwise, in the songs, especially when the title track is taken into consideration -- nothing else here resembles it, for the obvious reason that Redding never had a chance to follow it up. Despite the mix-and-match nature of the album, however, this is an impossible record not to love. Cropper chose his tracks well, selecting some of the strongest and most unusual among the late singer's orphaned songs: "I Love You More Than Words Can Say" is one of Redding's most passionate performances; "Let Me Come on Home" presents an ebullient Otis Redding accompanied by some sharp playing; and "Don't Mess With Cupid" begins with a gorgeous guitar flourish and blooms into an intense, pounding, soaring showcase for singer and band alike. No one could complain about the album then, and it still holds more than four decades later.

This is the final album in whose preparation Otis Redding actively participated, and his single biggest seller ever; a genuine historic artifact and one of the most cherished and beloved of all soul albums. The album comprises of the legendary title track, whose gentle, laid-back melancholy became a soundtrack to the entire soul generation, plus 10 other tracks culled from other Otis Redding albums and 45's… In terms of consistency, the album leaves something to be desired, but the sheer vocal power and emotional intensity of the performance easily compensate for all blemishes and rough spots. The title track was literally the last thing Otis Recorded in his life, and was left unfinished, for Steve Cropper and Volt/Stax engineers to reassemble and reincorporate, which they did masterfully. Recorded in a few frantic sessions just days before he died in a plane crash, Otis Redding was fighting with his own demons, as well as effects of a major surgery on his larynx, which rendered him inactive for most of his last summer (1967). As if he knew that his mortal hour was near, he poured his heart and soul in these, final sessions of November/December 1967. King of Soul still reigns, 33 years after his death. Bless your soul, Otis. Track listing: (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay, - I Love You More Than Words Can Say - Let Me Come On Home - Open The Door - Don't Mess With Cupid - Glory Of Love - I'm Coming Home To See About You - Tramp - Hucklebuck - Nobody Knows You (When You're Down And Out) - Ole Man Trouble.

The so-called "MINI" (or Juke Box) LPs ARE NOT to be confused for regular 7-inch, 4-track EPs which were widely commercially available. The 7-inch MINI LP's were made EXCLUSIVELY for use in Jukebox machines or for other promotional purposes and were usually accompanied by the set of 4- or 6 jukebox labels (usually, but not always, replicating the original cover artwork). The MINI LP's were NEVER commercially available in any way, manner or form, and are usually NOT listed as a separate category in the record collecting price books and directories. Unlike EP records which usually came with 4 tracks (2 on each side), MINI LPs were exactly what the name suggests: a mini version of the complete 12-inch album, usually with 3 (or even 4!) tracks on each side. MINI LPs were, therefore, supposed to be representative snapshots of the artist's latest album. We proudly present here a mighty rare specimen of the original JUKEBOX LP, complete with a set of jukebox labels (please see the image below). Mouthwatering is the right word here. Good luck finding one of these anywhere!
