What we have here technically DOES NOT EXIST and is not supposed to exist. To our best knowledge, the existence of this PROMO-ONLY mono version of this great album has never been documented or substantiated, and none of the price books and guides currently in print make any reference to its history or background. The historical importance of this item cannot be overestimated: this is an equivalent of discovering a long-lost animal- or plant species!!!

The bidders should note that this album contains mono mixes which are either considerably different: much more raw and "punchy" than the common, commercially available stereo mixes.

There is not a shred of doubt in my mind:  In the entire history of Soul Music, this has got to be one of the most - if not THE most emotionally drenching, devastating performance on record. Just as Billie Holiday's final studio album ("Lady in Satin", 1958) was a testament of an artists whose vocal power was on decline, but whose interpretative prowess at her peak, this, the final "real" Otis Redding album shows Otis pouring his heart and soul out, as if he were clinging on by the thread. Recorded in a few frantic sessions just days before he died in a plane crash, Otis Redding was fighting with his own demons, as well as effects of a major surgery on his larynx, which rendered him inactive for most of his last summer (1967). As if he knew that his final hour was near, he poured his heart and soul in these, final sessions of November/December 1967. What he left was an abundance of material, not all of it top-notch - which was lovingly compiled on three (3) posthumous albums by his label mate Steve Cropper (of Booker T & The MGs). Of the three albums which collect these, final, session tracks "The Immortal",  which came out first,  just weeks after Otis’ death - was by far the best and the most heartfelt and emotionally charged. This is one big, strong, cathartic listening experience. I can think of only one or two albums - in all of contemporary music - that radiate such emotional intensity. Otis is literally and figuratively struggling to keep his emotions in check. Some songs, like "A waste of Time" or "Thousand Miles Away", have got to be ultimate heartfelt soul vocal performances. King of Soul still reigns, 42 years after his death. Bless your soul, Otis.

These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in a hi-grade MFSL PVC inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)             The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          White Label Promo-only MONO pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 150:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a tiny, barely visible cutout hole in one of the corners

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.   (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)

-         Minor, barely visible, water stain noted in one corner (less than 1 square inch in size)

-         Cover has some writing on its back side (name of the previous owner written in blue ballpoint pen, about 1 x 2 inches in size)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
