"1001 Degrees Centigrades" is the rare 1971 second album by one of the most far-out, if not entirely flipped-out progressive/experimental bands from the early '70s.
Extremely creative and well done from start to finish, they managed an incredible creative career and are highly respected around the globe. Leader Christian Vander's drumming skills are much more precise than on Magma's first album (an epic 2LP set)
"Riah," the first track, is a way-out groove of sci-fi modified jazz , in opera rock context containing intense rhythms. Pay attention to the excellent bass textures and backing arrangement variations. Potentially the best track on the "busy" album, might be this opening epic 20 mins "Riah," track containing visceral rhythms throughout !
Iss Lansei Doia, track 2, is a very interesting jazz-prog track. Actually it's almost as good as "Riah," and the "odd voice" in the middle of the song is sensational, the drums variations are incredible, overall a very good track. The last one is not as good as the rest, but a well done complex composition. Let's put it this way, "1001 Degrees Centigrades" album is essential Magma work, it's not comparable to their Mëkanïk Dëstruktï? Kömmandöh peak album, but let's face it, that's another "voyage" altogether. But if you like the dark, intense, jazzy and mysterious side of Magma, try "1001 Degrees Centigrades" LP......
