I really adore Ann Peebles and Al Green who are both signed to Hi Records, and I've been really curious about their label mates whom include O.V. Wright of course (although this was his last album on a different label before switching to Hi).  This is very similar in style to music from either, it's deep soul music with elements leaning towards the funk and blues genres.  His voice is extremely soulful, sorta like Otis Redding with a bit of early Al Green in him, definitely easy to appreciate, fans of either should take note (though O.V. is perhaps a tad gruffer sounding).  The production of this album is courtesy of Willie Mitchell and it's quite superb, same can be said for the musicians who worked on this.  The songs are also of good quality, the character he adds to the songs really push them above and beyond though, the combination is definitely a winning one.  "He's My Son (Just the Same)" is one of my favorites, a really memorable ballad, the more spirited "I've Been Searching" and "Nothing Comes to a Sleeper" are other choice numbers but the whole album screams excellence.  No two ways about this: if you have never heard this album, you don't know what SOUL music is. Track listing: I've been searching - Nothing comes to a sleeper - The only thing that saved me - He's my son (just the same) - You must believe in yourself - Lost in the shuffle - I'd rather be blind, cripple and crazy - Please forgive me - Are you going where I am coming from - Ghetto child - Memory Blues - I'm going home (to live with God). 

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 20:1.

(d)            The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4  (front side) and 3 (back side)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged

-         Cover has a small original price sticker, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

-         Cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker.   (less than ¼ square inch in size)

-         Cover has a partially split top seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
