Description
1973 UK ORIGINAL PRESSING on RCA VICTOR 'Orange' label. The single cover is in VG condition, normal wear and without any major deterioration BUT discolouration/wear on spines/corners, surface ringwear, mild creases on edges, 0,5cm split/break on bottom right corner, left spine is readable; for details see photos. The vinyl is from VG to VG(+) condition (clicks & mild crackles, especially audible on the calmer parts) and sounds more than acceptable.

OVARY LODGE
Ovary Lodge was a progressive rock/jazz trio (and later quartet) founded by Keith Tippett (piano, zither), Roy Babbington (upright bass), and Frank Perry (percussion) in 1973 in the wake of Tippett's work with the Centipede Orchestra. With Robert Fripp serving as producer, they cut an album for RCA's U.K. division that was comprised of spontaneous free-form acoustic jazz-rock; in terms of sound, it fit in midway between King Crimson's Lizard album and the Larks' Tongues in Aspic album. A couple of years later, with Harry Miller replacing Babbington on bass and Tippett's singer wife Julie Tippett (the former Julie Driscoll of Brian Auger & the Trinity fame) added to the line-up, they cut a second and final LP.

Anyone who enjoyed the jazzy piano fingerings that Keith Tippett brought to the second, third, and fourth King Crimson albums, or the extended big-band experiments that Tippett's Centipede rock orchestra recorded around this same time, will want to try the jagged textured improvisations of Ovary Lodge. Consisting of Tippett on piano and zither, Roy Babbington on bass, Frank Perry on percussion, and Robert Fripp producing, this is an acoustic trio companion to the kind of jazzy piano noodling that Tippett made his name with on those Crimson albums. "Amethyst, Gold and Royal Blue," the first part of "Mountain Temple in Spring," even manages to recall "Larks' Tongues in Aspic" with its use of bells, gong, finger cymbals, and other percussive devices. "A Frail White Butterfly, Beneath the Spell of Moon Is Sleeping on the Huge Bronze Bell" and "Tropic of Capricorn" seem to be built almost as much on sound effects generated by the instruments as on identifiable music as such, and it's only on "Nursery Rhyme" that Tippett explores the lyrical and traditional musical strengths of his instrument. Then we get "Sylphs in Pisces," a piece as off-putting in its tempo shifts and textural transformations as "Nursery Rhyme" is alluring...(AllMusic)
