Description
Here's another great Northern Soul rarity, a monster of a platter from San Francisco. Dig this, a clean copy of Ozz and his Sperlings and their sweat-soaked "Can You Qualify." I've seen this on so many lists, but I don't think I've ever actually seen the record till now. The topside is "Can You Qualify" which is a great blues-based soul tune with a chick chorus and a super horn section driving it along. It's easy to see why this record has attained near-mythic proportions. On the Goldenway label #501 A/B...it's a white label but I don't know if it's a promo.
On the flipside is another strong number, the song "Daddy Rolling Stone." Despite Jesse Osborne (Ozz himself) taking credit for writing this, the tune is the Otis Blackwell song that was covered by the Who as one of their mod flipsides at the dawn of their career. This particular version by Ozz and his group goes at it like some sort of soulish rock band with a Jimi Hendrix type vocal. A girl group sings some backing. Strong guitar, but no Jimi type soloing. A great flipside. I must be mad for selling this, I'll never find it again! (Thank you Reel George for your fine copy!! See you in Austin.)
CONDITION: Disc is VG++ with a few light sleeve scuffs. Labels are VG++ with the excepton of a small label smudge on "Qualify" side and an x in red pen and demo stamp on the flip, that was the "A" side. See scans. This is a 45 rpm record. NO RESERVE.
