Description
The shellac playing surfaces are Visually graded:
VG++ and very clean looking
Zavel (also called Sawel) was a Russian-born
cantor and composer, born March 25, 1874
in Chonorod near Yelizavetgrad, Russia (now Ukraine)
and died September 22, 1952 in Mamaroneck, NY, USA.
Gifted with a rich lyric baritone, Kwartin studied
voice with some of the finest teachers of his time.
He performed his first sabbath service in 1896
in Yelizavetgrad (now Kropyvnytskyi, Ukraine).
After giving a well-received concert in Lodz in 1897,
he embarked on a tour of Europe for the next five years.
In 1903, he was appointed Obercantor of the
Queen Elizabeth Temple in Vienna, Austria.
He also served as a cantor in St. Petersburg
and at the Tabak Temple in Budapest.
In April 1920, Kwartin emigrated to the United States
where he served as the Chief Cantor of Temple Emanuel
of Borough Park, Brooklyn, NY, gave concerts,
and made many recordings. In July 1925, be became
a naturalized U.S. citizen. In 1926, he moved to Israel,
but returned to the United States in 1937
to become Cantor in Newark, NJ.
Opera Disc Company is the semi-official,
(largely considered unofficial),
U.S. record company, founded by
New York securities broker Max Hesslein and
active from April 1921 to March 1923.
Opera Disc Co. records were manufactured in Hannover,
Germany, by Deutsche Grammophon GmbH (DGG),
using The Gramophone Co. Ltd. and Victor masters.
These masters had originally been given to DGG's
predecessor Deutsche Grammophon-Aktiengesellschaft,
then a subsidiary of British "The Gramophone Co. Ltd.",
for distribution in Germany and had been confiscated
as enemy alien property during World War I
so that DGG considered itself their rightful owner.
On March 31, 1923, however,
Victor won an injunction against
Opera Disc Company that forced the company
to turn all its records, catalogs,
and advertising material over to Victor,
so they could be destroyed.
The label also shows the trademark Musica G.D..
Originally registered by
Frenchman Georges Dutreih (G. D.) in 1904,
this trademark was registered in the U.S. in 1921
by Polyphonwerke A.-G., the same company who
had acquired Deutsche Grammophon-Aktiengesellschaft
in 1917 and released the same Gramophone Co. masters
as the Opera Disc Company in Germany
under the Grammophon label.
